Cole's good heart and mature outlook and the clean pop beats make "FHD" a thoroughly enjoyable album.

Cool, well-produced "conscious" modern rap, but 2014 Forest Hills Drive seems to succumb to the weight of its own self-importance. It's clear that Cole wanted to create a "grand" album, and while he's trying to give himself the means of his ambition, it mostly isn't working as well as he'd wanted. The beats, while cool, often fail to be marking, and the same goes for his rapping. A competent, decent album that strived to be more than that.

Yeah its average and most of the songs are forgetful. Wet Dreamz is good tho and note to self is really cool and origal, i think theres no album who've done the same

J.Cole's arrogance and almost straight up whining for the rap community to respect him offsets the somewhat average production. J.Cole is an ok at best rapper with one of the worst fanbases I have ever seen. There is no possible universe in which J.Cole is on par with Kendrick or even Drake lol. If I wanted to see a self-loving narcissist bitch about how he's not respected enough I would listen to The Wall.

J. Cole is the most average rapper on the planet. He's not bad, he's very appealing in a way most rap is, but beyond that he doesn't do anything particularly well. This is his best album - Cole albums are usually exercises of finding ways to create a generic rap albums that attempt to act like time machines (something that greatly appeals to his audience, who seem to like not very special rappers if they reject the premise that music changes), and while this one isn't fundamentally different, it seems to actually try to find out who J. Cole is. Unfortunately, J. Cole still can't tell a story without using every other character as a prop or tell any story, can't paint a picture beyond imaging himself as the "Fredrick Douglas of rhetoric" (in a song that is otherwise very good that is not on this album). He just kind of raps. But at least he sounds more comfortable about the kind of album he wants to make.

This shit was honestly mind blowing. Such an improvement from born sinner. The production was on point and his songs were very good conceptually and lyrically.
