| 0.0 | Kusuriuri | June 18th 16 | Years before Coltrane even glanced at the idea, Lateef was bringing the east to the western jazz banquet and on his most famous record he lands one of the most peaceful offerings within the jazz canon. Though it's arguable to what extent much of this is actually Eastern, tinges of those sounds can be heard from start to finish and they are most easily recognized by the use of instruments like oboe and flute, although compositional flavors can also be spotted by the later half. In any case, this is a beautiful record that often feels simultaneously other worldly and grand and also warm and intimate, and any fan of jazz should give it a go if for nothing else to hear how one of the earliest examples of east-meets-west in jazz was like.
