After the relentless pummeling of Big Black and slower noise spasms of Rapeman, Shellac is basically the band that shows Steve is growing old (in a good way) but still knows how to make weird, abrasive music. His guitars are more angular than abrasive, the playing more mathematical in a Slint kind of way, and the band as a whole plays more like a rock band. Maturing can be a good thing I guess.

Three men, three lines of attack: the guitar is in charge of velocity, bass constitutes the mass, and the drums dictate the time. Melody is secondary here, letting groove and dynamics command the music: drums'n'bass create a spin-cycle pace upon which the guitar shrieks its anti-melodic textures. This is as much noise rock as it is post-hardcore or math rock: a true document of the state of indie rock in 1994.

Abrasive post-hardcore that takes a minimalist ethos to its absolute limitations - if that makes sense.

In many ways it's stripped down Big Black, but by no means rehash. It is distinctly stark+abrasive Albini, but the band-in-a-room sound here works wonders, as does their precision and chemistry.

Something about Shellac really seems to get on the nerves of the sort of indie fashionistas, scenesters and pseudo-progressives that you tend to see reviewing this sort of music in the first place. Something about the band's modernized classic rock ethos, the stark tension-and-release songcraft, the emphasis put on craftsmanship and technicality, and the way they deal with masculinity without (gasp!) "subverting" or "deconstructing" it. It kinda pushes Johnny Trustfund's buttons to see that his trails were blazed by "unenlightened" lumberjacks. As a result there's a deeply unfashionable/unhip air about Albini's bands among the sort of people who use the word "cisgender" without any irony, and if there's a better mark of quality I'd like to see it.
