This is one of the best albums released in the new millennium. What makes this album superb is: the emotion Conor puts into his lyrics, and his great songwriting in general. Every song on here is pretty dang good and enjoyable. I would strongly encourage people who are into folk and alternative music to give this a listen.

I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning exists as an open, liberated masterpiece with all the emotion Oberst is capable of and heaps of pop songwriting ability to boot. But more than that, it's 45 minutes of music that allow you to be absolutely nowhere, and the time to just be now. Don't feel sorry for Conor Oberst. He'll be just fine.

Intimate and exorcised, this album builds off the talents of so many other tracks laboriously developed by a modern master, indie songwriter. His poetry has never been so clear as this nor has he ever hit so many identifiable sentiments in one attempt, Bright Eyes (Mr. Oberst) managed to bridge a gap between his obscure beginnings and his polished present making himself sit at the same level as an early Bob Dylan without the fame or regard. These statements seem dramatic but after allowing his unsettling voice (which he argues for in this album) and serious approach harbor itself in your musical palette (a la the same barriers for Bob Dylan and today's generation), he will move you in a new way and make tracks intended for one to kiss their partner like the first time again. It all sounds like a bit much but to understand the effort this man has put into his craft then it makes sense. Spin it around and around until you get it when he talks about the bottom of everything... then you'll see it.

Conor Oberst is famous, beloved by many, and regarded as one of the best songwriters of his generation. Quite impressive, considering the miniscule amount of talent he has. On this album, Oberst lone gift-his lyrics-abandon him, leaving him with clunky verses that are in no way aided by the dying goat's bleat he calls his voice. On top of that, his attempts at country-rock arrangements come across as tired and lifeless. At least Ryan Adams could play with a little soul.

The emotion in the music comes across as really affected and false, which, for the lack of a better word,
makes the whole album seem fake. I have no idea if Conor is really that sad, but the way he sings and the way
the music is composed it's clear he tries really hard to make it seem like he is. The whole thing just comes off
as being very insincere.

in high school i was so obsessed with lua and i'm so mad it's taken me this long to listen to the whole album-- so good. connor oberst's vocals are a perfect fit here, and the album is simultaneously incredibly cohesive but goes through a range of various emotions and sounds beautifully. so good, mwah.

I didn't love this as much as I expected to. The lyrics didn't connect with me, although they're great, and normally while I love folk, the production on this record got a little boring over the course of my listening. Still a good album, it simply didn't do much for me.

Conor Oberst's masterpiece. Incredible songwriting, lots of emotion, basically what he had been working for his whole career. I'm just now revisiting this album and I am kicking myself for having it at a 4.5. It is clearly a 5.

I understand, with Bright Eyes, you hate it or love it. I've heard it all, from Conor Oberst being a bitch, Bright Eyes being too selfish, and the most common: "This music is sappy bullshit made for girls". On this album, Conor really took a step up in terms of maturity, as well as songwriting. Tracks like "At the Bottom of Everything" and "Lua" are so well crafted, they should at least earn a head nod from all the haters out there. Conor Oberst is one of the most prolific songwriters in our generation, and although I know this album will never satisfy all of you pretentious bastards out there, it should at least gain your respect.

well this is my favorite album and its not really close. this album changed the way i listened to music. at the time i listened to this album, freshman year in uni, i pretty much only listened to pop-punk and my favorite bands were nofx and four year strong. i still vividly remember checking out at the bottom of everything on youtube and listening to conor tell that story and i didn't know what to expect. then the song kicked in and the lyrics just amazed me. before this, i never really cared for lyrics, but for some reason, the switch just flipped. the first couple times i listened to it, i HAD to read the lyrics along with it. i listened over and over and never got tired of it. a couple years later, i still discover lines that just amaze me. i can honestly say that i believe that every lyric on this album is gold. i could go on forever about this album so i'll just say this; this album changed my life. instead of music (listening or writing) being something to do to pass the time, music is now something i love way more than words can describe and plays a huge role in my life.

Waning to everyone. Never ever buy a Bright Eyes album off Itunes or anything digital. BUY IT IN THE STORE. Not only cause the artwork is beautiful, but these CD's are ment to be played as a whole, and out loud.

Conor Oberst is a unique individual, that's a certainty. Always finding intriguing and important ways of expressing his views through the majesty of song. Here is no exception- I'm Wide Awake is a collection of mostly intimate, raw acoustic observation of the world around. The only exception to this rule, ironically, is the album highlight- album closer Road to Joy is a brilliant, layered jam session with erratic guitar and wild blurts of trumpet.
Also worth checking out is the pensive First Day of My Life, the soaring Landlocked Blues and the quiet-is-the-new-loud glory of Lua.
