Interstellar Space is Trane and drummer Rashied Ali only. No harmonic or melodic structure here: the two instruments superpose one another for forty minutes. It might thus be the most "free" Trane has ever been, yet the result ends up less obtuse than other '65-'66 recordings of his. That might be because the tunes still follow a structure - theme/rise/climax/descent/theme - that brings some coherence to a wild displaying of power. Still can't say I'm a big fan of the free jazz Trane, but I just cannot not like the sound he makes with his tenor.

Look. I know this is not Coltrane's best album, but for some reason I love this. The speed of his playing is so remarkable. The drummer, Rashied Ali, is just relentless. It is a incredibly difficult, but fulfilling listen.

Probably Coltrane's most radical work from a compositional perspective, if indeed these can formally be called compositions and not improvisations. After all, this is just Coltrane and Rashied Ali, dishing out some strange and powerful and utterly discordant stuff. These are the outer limits of jazz.r

For an album that is 100% a sax-drum duet with chaotic rhythm and relatively erratic (but not dissonant) sax with zero in the way of hooks or anything for the memory to latch on, this works surprisingly great. Sure it feels like a technical exercise more than an album; sure it feels a bit like what some other albums use as interlude, except it is only that and goes on for 35 min; but in the end I didn't have a bad time, and the album does feel like it has a conclusion. CD bonus tracks: 'Leo is more of the same except a touch noisier, it's cool but obviously as the album feels like it has a conclusion it its 4 track version, that one feels disjointed. Jupiter Variation is also just more of the same. So it's really a question of whether you want to listen to a 35min or 50min long album like this. This was recorded the year of Coltrane's death, and makes you wonder where he would have gone next. 3.5

92/100. Rashied and Coltrane has perfect chemistry on this LP, bouncing off each other with spastic solos, screeching harmonies, and chaotic crescendos. I love the barebones sound that playing in a duet allows--- both musician's technical ability are on display, and provide for mind blowing interplay and skill.
