Well this album came out of absolutely no where. Incredible release, could be one of the best this year.

An excellent mix of post-rock and emo landscapes. These guys have a lot of room to grow but I'll be definitely looking forward to their next release.

This has gotten many comparisons to Thrice if they mixed post rock with their music, and for good reason. The music has the "lighter" twinkling guitars, crescendos, and loud climaxes that is to be expected with post rock. Guitarist and vocalist, Kevin Dye's vocals soar with his singing and screams across each track. There are some really stellar moments throughout this album, from softer, more delicate moments to where the band explode with walls of sound. Truly a stunning debut from a fantastic band that is sure to deliver more stunning music.

With one of the best debuts in awhile, Gates rocket themselves out of the gate (pun intended) and into a bright and promising future with Bloom and Breathe. The music definitely pulls the best of what post rock has to offer. It’s melodic, catchy, atmospheric and it makes you feel like you’re moving forward with the song. What it doesn’t have are the lame-ass extended build-ups that lead to a brief few moments of actual quality. This post rock sound is mixed with the style that Thrice had evolved towards right before their breakup. That on its own would probably be good enough, but the vocals (yes, there are vocals) are also well done and also kind of remind me of Thrice. Hence my ‘Thrice goes post rock’ description.
