Slipknot's fifth studio album is hard to despise as it is tough to enjoy over the course of the record's 63-minute length. On one hand, .5: The Gray Chapter is home to a couple of Corey Taylor's most visceral vocal performances in quite some time, and the affair's no slouch when it comes down to the instrumental department either. However on the other side of the spectrum, far too much padding transpires to deem Gray Chapter a consistent listen. Adding to that issue, the lyrical content is laughably dumb, this album's core sound isn't treated well thanks to a poor mixdown, and composition fares only decent at best - at worst questionable. Once one gets past the childish lyricism and drawn out duration, this can prove to be an enjoyable beast, although I hesitate to call it revolutionary or cohesive in the slightest.

Finds it annoying that my original (and valid) soundoff wasd. It's hard to find thoughts that cohere on any level with Sputnik's elitism. .5 The Gray Chapter is not the album it was hyped up to be, after a six year break, but it's far from being a 'bad' release. Slipknot teeters on the same formula with new blood and the surprising "Killpop" actually highlights the new record.

Alright in all seriousness, this was surprisingly decent. The percussion sounds fantastic and Corey still
sounds as good as ever. However, .5 is plagued by the same embarrassing lyricism the band is know for as
well
some pretty garbage production. In addition to that, its just Slipknot doing the same angsty shtick again.
Maybe I matured out of this band or something but this just feels juvenile. It's decent but kinda embarrassing
at the same time. But hey, this is Slipknot. What did you expect in the first place?
EDIT: Yeah this got even worse after each listen. Boring angsty drivel is boring angsty drivel. 2.7/5

Remember in my introduction when I said that my only criteria for this list is how much I enjoyed listening to the album? Well, I enjoyed the shit out of this album. If people don’t see that this is probably one of the more diverse and varied releases to come out of the mainstream metal world in a long time, then they’re just not listening. The band are finally close to actually utilizing the members that don’t play guitars or drums, and it has made for some great songs. The samples and additional sounds are really what gives the songs an additional edge and it doesn’t hurt that they decided to mix the best of Iowa with the best of All Hope is Gone. This is definitely the first Slipknot release without any filler and the diversity makes it something that can be enjoyed from start to finish. Again, for a mainstream release this has a lot going for it. Great riffs, diverse influences, strong choruses and it’s definitely heavy. If you can’t hear Corey Taylor belt out a line like “I know why Judas wept, Motherfucker” and not just chuckle and move on, then you take your music too serious.

This album has some great moments, a lot of stuff that felt plucked from Vol 3. My main issue is that this does not deserve to be 65 minutes? this overstays its welcome tenfold. The cuts that try to capture the aggression and energy of early releases dont work as well as they used to, making the standout tracks the softer moments, or the ones which find a good balance. Tracks like Custer and Skeptic ironically slow down the album too much for my taste. Overall I like the sound more here than the follow up, but it lacks pacing and consistency, and I find myself playing All Hope is Gone far more than this. Probably their worst album

I found this album pretty delightful. After All Hope is Gone, band went through a lot. A lot. Paul Gray's tragic loos and departure of long time drummer Joey Jordison definitely shaked the band in a very bad way. But they managed to deal with this stumble and delivered a great album. This has proven that Slipknot is one of the pioneer forces of today's metal.

I?d say more, but it would be redundant. I?m left not feeling surprised at all, yet just as sad as when I listened to the last two albums. Slipknot?s self-titled was the first metal album I listened to from start to finish. A buddy popped it into my disc-man (yes, those existed) on a road trip and I never looked back. Listening to that album still gets my blood pumping, veins popping, and heart racing. Despite having grown from there onto much more extreme metal acts, both old and new, I still feel those first two albums can hold their own in the fray. This?is not that. There are some glimmers here and there, like the vocals on Custer and the opening of The Negative One, but it is too little too late. There are much worse metal albums out there, but I still can?t recommend this. With giants such as Behemoth, Vader, and Septicflesh releasing monumental albums this year; The Gray Chapter is a mere cockroach in their wake. I?m sure record sales may say otherwise, but the different levels of exposure make that a grossly unfair basis of comparison. As always, give it a listen for yourself to make up your own mind. r

For the seven songs that itunes has given me so far, i am really enjoying this album. I really like Corey's screams and the drumming as improved dramatically. I wish that is sounded a little less clean but too late for them to change it so its okay as it is.

As one of the few who thinks AHIG was their best record, I think .5 is a worthy followup. While the rhythm section is lacking in some areas, the songs are tight, the guitar work is great even if there are a lack of solos, and Corey's voice fits this record.

Oddly enough I would say the highlight of this album is the percussion, it came out great. Not really sure how to feel about the rest of it yet, the god awful lyrics are a bit of a put off and the guitar work seems very lacking. They were never exactly shredders but this seems weak even for them. But the energy is there... most of the time.

The only real issue I have with this album is the abysmal lyrics. Everything else is awesome. It is like an old Slipknot album but they are actually good musicians now and not trapped by the nu-metal genre rules of the past. This rules more than I thought it would.
