Well this is my introduction to this band, and I'm actually quite impressed. Apart from some annoying vox and compression, there are some really cool riffs and progressions here. That, and the bass is awesome.

I think we're all pondering whether this was the same act who made Doom and Genesis or not. Arizona-based Job for a Cowboy have figured out that if they - as death metal musicians - were getting a ray of welcomed hope, then all's they had to do is devour the sun. Sun Eater has a whole lot of enjoyability and the production values certainly help; without that audible bass and Jonny Davy's malicious growls, this wouldn't be a quality record.

Unpopular opinion, but can't help but think this was a virtue signal in an attempt to dissuade people from defining Job for a Cowboy as simply those dudes who made "Doom". Kinda like they were cleaning up a "mess" figuratively speaking. Of course, that's not their intention, But also not why I dislike it. I just don't fuck with prog, simple as that. Btw what's up with good bands turning to prog?

From only listening to Doom and Genesis previously, this was ridiculously shocking. This album is absolutely fantastic. Completely unexpected, as others have said. Really quite beautiful. Compares to some of the great Mastodon albums in atmosphere and mixing. Bass is super audible with tone and volume similar to old school Mudvayne. Absolutely loving it.rAfter a few spins, it gets slightly repetitive, but has enough detail to still be really interesting and tasteful. Great tunes to write code to as well  Best metal release I've soaked in given the last couple years or so. Memorable, high-quality material from a band that's always lacked in multiple areas previously. A huge improvement in form and songwriting. If they can step it up a few more notches, we may have a classic looming in the future.

Job for a Cowboy finally make the album that they were meant to. Riffs and bass and awesome album artwork and song titles with some tasteful technical chops amount to a damn fine listen. As much as I love Doom, it is great to see them finally come into their own as a "good band."

Awesome album. One thing I especially noticed was how little blatant wankery this album has, especially considering the genre. The solos are amazing, but most of the othrt technicality is more subtly pulled off, making it almost more impressive.

For me the biggest suprise of 2014. Runiation and Demonocracy were decent, but this stuff just blows them out of the water. I can hardly believe that this is the same band that made Genesis and this album. Jazz influenced tech death at it's finest.ÿ

Sun Eater is a welcome change of direction for Job For a Cowboy. JFAC used to just be a shitty deathcore band, but now appear to be more progressive and technical, largely due to the outstanding performance from the bassist.

An immense improvement over previous efforts. The bass is beautiful and the tacky scene deathcore choices are finally gone. The only things holding back this release from really being one of the finest are the lack of varied dynamics (there are plenty, but even those are formulaic once you've heard them) and at times a very strong resemblance to The Black Dahlia Murder.

Holy shit. There's no way this is the same band that released Doom and I couldn't be happier. Prog? Prog. No more bree bree. I NEVER liked this band. And I never really WANTED to like this band. But looks like I'm gonna have to change my tune here pretty soon.
