| 3.7 great | Erwann S. EMERITUS | February 21st 24 | There are eight people jamming here, but this ain't no octet: it's a double quartet. The difference is huge, as both quartet follows its own rhythm (on its own channel in the stereo version). Despite the collegial dissonance and the 37mins-long improv, Free Jazz nevertheless manages to make some sense thanks to its constant groove and attachment to traditional bop instrumentation.

| 4.5 superb | GamamJ | December 13th 20 | After taking a massive leap in removing all chordal instruments on The Shape of Jazz to Come, Coleman takes another plunge in making improvisation completely free, and basically spawning free jazz. Brilliant piece of art.

| 4.5 superb | commonist | April 5th 18 | On paper a double quartet free improvising in separate channels sounds disastrous. And yet, this album is a beautiful mess of jazz that works in so many ways. Really really liked this.

| 1.5 very poor | jefflebowski | December 16th 11 | it gets half a point for being "influential". Coltrane did this much, much better on ascension
