3.8 excellent | Rudy K. EMERITUS | October 27th 14 | Her early work was a little too 'country' for my taste, but when Fearless came out in '08, I think she really came into her own - both commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. She's been compared to Miranda Lambert, but I think Taylor has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humour. In '14, Taylor released this, 1989, her most accomplished album. I think her undisputed masterpiece is 'Style', a song so catchy most people probably don't listen to the lyrics - but they should! Because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about Taylor herself!

5.0 classic | BallsToTheWall | November 2nd 14 | There are albums with zazz and albums without zazz. 1989 is a perfect example of an album that was expertly crafted with zazz. Taylor Swift took the zazz train to zazzville for 1989 and it shows in all 13 of it's glorious zazz enhanced tracks. You will not find a zazzier album in 2014. I personally fucking guarantee it. #zazz

4.0 excellent | Douglas | November 5th 14 | I previously wrote that Taylor Swift should stop endeavoring with her pop cross overs and rthat they were tediously tempting us on Red: they were a soft whisper in the wind of the rfuture direction - and it didn't look great. I also said she shouldn't collaborate with rMax Martin anymore: as ...Trouble was the plague. We wanted Speak Now V.2. We got 1989: a rcompletely pop album, with production from Max Martin, with no country vibes in site. We ralso got the best Taylor Swift record to date. 1989 is everything I didn't want, but reverything I ever wanted.

1.5 very poor | Aftertheascension | November 16th 14 | A juvenile, pathetic attempt at pop music. All this album has done is show what happens when an artist sells out. "Shake it off" is embarrassingly bad, with the rest of the album being mediocre or poor at best.

4.5 superb | soldier0cross | March 14th 15 | It's weird, Taylor Swift started out writing fun and quirky country pop songs with and had a few major hits along the way. Eventually she started going the more pop route with mostly songs centered around breakups and relationships. Then 1989 comes out and it's one of the best pop albums in years. There's a rarity of honest and clean pop music and much less the type that happens to be cool and stylish at the same time. From her great vocals to solid song writing and how she manages to balance all the aspects of her music in such a well made, fun and focused package. Taylor Swift has all the potential to become one of the biggest pop music behemoth's of all time.

4.0 excellent | Jared Floryan | February 2nd 15 | I love how a woman who once had teardrops on her guitar finally went the extra mile just to record an album that's even more pop-oriented than what we've come to expect from T-Swizzle's usual output, which sported very noticeable country influences; yeah, this is all coming from a douchenozzle who was born in le wrong generation, so forgive me for not acknowledging much of Red aside from "I Knew You Were Trouble," "22," and "We Are Never Ever Getting Together". Anyway, the typical PG-rated subject matter notwithstanding, 1989 has a downright irresistible charm to it helped by the somewhat experimental approach to this album's production style as well as Taylor's well-executed vocal melodies.

3.0 good | charlopiano | June 14th 21 | I think this is very overrated. It stands in the middle of three pop movements without really fully going into any of them. It takes elements of the EDM-beginning of the 2010s, the drop/buildup dominated end of the the 2010s or Carly Rae's Emotion-booming bass infused record. It kinda only dips a toe into each of them, without having really having anything to add to it. If you add to that the fact that I'm not much of a fan of Swift's lyrics. Most of the record ends up being a little forgettable to me. It's a tolerable pop record with 2 amazing tracks: Style and Wildest Dreams, but the rest is not for me.

3.5 great | mandan | December 10th 20 | Entertaining stuff, but there's little here that can be called great pop imo.
Bump |
3.5 great | Bedex | July 14th 20 | I've heard my fair share of bad mainstream pop albums, and this clearly isn't one of them. I'd say it sits at the bottom, low growth potential end of my personal mainstream pop top tier at this point. It is very consistent with not a single bad track, consistent direction for the first time since her country days, and top notch production all around, but the real bangers are also relatively scarce. Namely 3, the guilty pleasure super famous 6, and 10 are super fun tracks. The album doesn't feel like it truly starts before 3 actually. 1 is okay but really not that catchy for summer teen pop (perhaps because it is quite slow). 2 improves with catchier delivery, sweet nostalgia vibes, and just being funny, but doesn't yet feel like a banger. 4 is not bad but not great, then 5 is catchier again. Even the less dancy songs have cool sounds or good melodies here and there, and again none or bad - see 7 or 9. Some of the vocal deliveries are impressive, like on 8, and the album manages to make me not mind a ballad on 11 thanks to synth background, prod etc. The sequencing is smart, putting the ballad right after a catchy peak and not following up with another emotional song but rather with the nice sappy 12. The closing track feels a bit flat compared to 2-12, it's neither catchy nor vibey, which is a bit of a shame, but it doesn't prevent 1989 from being one of the most consistent mainstream pop records I've heard. 3.5

4.5 superb | Lucman | March 20th 18 | 1989 is pop brilliance. It has some of the best hooks of Swift's career, the 80s throwback is delicious, and the entire record is just one infectious, sugary jam. Quite possibly my all-time favourite modern pop record.

5.0 classic | 3waycrash | September 23rd 16 | 1989 sees Taylor Swift fully embracing her modern pop identity and doing it gracefully. Prior to this I hadn't considered myself a fan of Taylor Swift, only really being familiar with her singles through radio play. Giving this a listen (as well as her past discography) I found some fantastic pop music. The songs are catchy with clever songwriting and genuine lyrics. Between this and Speak Now, this is Taylor Swift at her absolute best.
Bump |
3.0 good | NewBallistics | May 17th 16 | Taylor finally ditches her country boots in favor of a sexier pair of high heels. The result, however, leaves me unhinged. My biggest issue is that repeated listens soured the flavor of this record much faster than anything else I've heard recently on the radio. Catchy beats yet bland and irritating hooks are the name of the game here. It still has more value than anything else in her current discography but 1989 certainly won't be remembered as the album that took 2014.

1.0 awful | PrestonWCondra | December 3rd 15 | Oh boy get your pitchforks ready but, I detested this album. The only decent song I enjoyed here was Out Of The Woods. I'm not a hater. I got the deluxe edition for a Christmas gift last year and I even uploaded the pictures included in the album on my YouTube Channel. rhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Sjh6qQbpfo&rrWhy I uploaded the pictures included in the package on YouTube I don't know. Yes I have respect for her. I think her talent is stupendous. But...I just didn't like this album at all. Sorry not really sorry.

4.0 excellent | Teacherlisakc | June 26th 15 | Taylor SwiftrInspiring. That?s what Taylor Swift?s 1989, album is to me. 1989 is the 11th album
Taylor has made. Taylor writes Pop music & music about her life & also songs about past
boyfriends/ breakups. Most overall impressions of Taylor Swift are boyfriend junky & bad at
choosing boyfriends. rSome of the instruments that are in Taylor Swift?s album are drum sets,
trumpets, pianos, & recording studio things to help her music stand out. A meaning of ?Shake it
Off? was to help people keep confidence in their-self. I have feeling that Taylor Swift wrote ?
Shake it Off? because, Taylor is judged by fans & Taylor lost confidence in herself & Taylor
wanted to express herself to the world & for other people that are going through the same
situation.

4.0 excellent | Jacob Clark | April 18th 15 | Well, it's official: Taylor Swift and country are never ever getting back together...like, ever. 1989 showcases the superstar eschewing her roots and completely reinventing her sound--a marked improvement over her previous album Red, which felt schizophrenic enough to be in an institution. What surprises me most about 1989, however, is how good Swift sounds with her new sound and how good her new sound is. It sounds like this is the kind of music she should have been doing all along: good, catchy, and unconventional synthpop (for the most part). Of course, there a couple small missteps here and there, but on the whole this is a very encouraging album for pop music and Taylor Swift's future.

3.0 good | SmartWentCody | March 23rd 15 | My sister listened to this album on a road trip we recently took. Ended up hearing it about 1 and
a half times. I'm really not a fan of Pop, but within the genre, this is a great CD. Lots of
catchy tunes, which is really the only objective when it comes to Pop music, so it succeeds in
it's efforts. Great production, solid Pop record. Outside the genre: 2.5/5, Within the genre: 4/5.

4.5 superb | hippocheese14 | March 10th 15 | Clocking in at nearly a hundred listens, I can easily say this is my favourite 2014 release. Although lyricism is all too 'Swifty' at times, this is a solid release that really shines among the Black and EDM-influenced pop that's circling today's radiowaves. I wish Bad Blood didn't suck so hard.

4.0 excellent | TheManMachine | February 2nd 15 | When you have vocal hooks this mighty and streamlined 80's-homage pop production that is this sweetly irresistible (the stuff is engineered by scientists or something, 4 real), the same ol' tired-feeling and always rated PG themes aren't really a bother. Limited as the subject matter may be, it also is delivered and written with the consistent eloquence of a songstress-maestro.
