One of the best prog/death metal albums made. This band is often compared to Opeth but I don't see it, sure they both have long songs and mix melody with brutality, but Disillusion are a lot more compact and their songwriting just creatively flows without being random and split up, the vocals are perfect for the sound, the death metal grunt is often used but it's the clean singing that gives this album such an immense quality, the songwriting is great, from start to finish, with some of the catchiest parts of the songs not leaving your head for months. A must buy for any metal fan.

Though often compared to Opeth (mostly by people who've never heard clean passages combined with extreme metal anywhere else), Disillusion are a different beast entirely. The vocals are less technically impressive but slightly more emotionally expressive, the acoustic passages are more based in a folk heritage than a blues ones, the contrast between different sections is handled in a much more subtle way, there's more keyboards, and a lot of the melodies offered up by their lead guitarist boast a strong Indian influence. Comparisons aside, though, this is a fantastic album with some excellent guitar parts and more good ideas stuffed into single songs than a lot of metal bands manage over the course of an album. Honestly, this really is as good as people say - it's well on its way to becoming a genre classic, and it deserves it.

Where to begin. This album went from a 3.5, to a 4, to a 4.5, to a 5; with each successive listen I simply couldn't believe how much emotion, how many change-ups and different sound elements, how many vocal transitions, and layers of melody, how technical and brutal, how beautiful and serene the things I was hearing were, and how natural and un-forced it all felt. This is something that I often look for in music, but rarely find; something that naturally creates a mood, and holds your attention to it, causing you to think about nothing but the music, not forcefully, but gracefully, tastefully, and dynamically. This album is a good as everyone says. Better even perhaps, for it took me nearly a dozen listens just to begin to understand the depth of musicianship, songwriting mastery, technical prowess, and natural emotion that, no, not permeates this album, IS this album.

It's quite obvious where Disillusion's inspirations came from; with Opeth and, to a lesser extent, Between the Buried and Me being the immediate call-outs. And for what it's worth, Back to Times of Splendor does a great job at handling its core sound. Granted, it's less impressive than what you'll find from a band who are far more decisive and adept at handling a progressive sound. Ultimately, this debut shows far more promise than many bands can provide in their short runs. Simultaneously, however, it's both easy and rightful to look at this as little more than an entry way for the heavier groups such as Opeth, given this feels like them with a rather prevalently 'core sound.

This is a really solid progressive melodeath release. I don't really see why this would be so universally highly rated, though. There're plenty of other comparable quality releases with this overall sound, in my opinion. Still, certainly worthwhile for fans of this subgenre. Title track is easily the best track.

My respect for this album has only declined with time (formerly being someone who foolishly thought BTToS was anywhere NEAR the quality of Still Life). There is plenty to like, but I feel the weaker moments in this album (especially some really uneasy vocal parts) drag it down. Ironically, I actually liked Andy's voice for Gloria, but the title track of this album would have been much better off without him.

Not quite as spectacular as many would have you believe but a superb effort nonetheless with plenty of shining highlights throughout its 6 songs. The only problem I have with this is the vocals, which not only sound odd at times, but also way too similar to the guy from System of a Down. The lyrics and overall musicianship is terrific though.

Can only say that this is one of the best metal albums i have. It mixes clean with heavy vocals, techinical guitar play with soft accustic, it's emotional in the same way heavy and catchy. Im sure the choruses and the melodies will be in your head for along time to come. From the first track to the last it's a ride no metal fans wants to miss. Shame so few have heard of it, because the quality of this album is rarely found elsewhere. Classic!
