| 3.7 great | Trey STAFF | January 13th 23 | This album reminds me a lot of New Found Glory’s Coming Home. That was NFG’s attempt at growing up and writing some serious grown up music about being all grown up. Ha ha, I know that sounds lame and a lot of their younger fans would agree. It took me a long time, but eventually I came to appreciate that album. So, it’s probably with Coming Home‘s help that I was able to approach this in a way that helped me appreciate this much sooner than I otherwise would have. Lift A Sail shares nothing with the band that released Ocean Avenue and their violinist is still under-utilized, but it’s an excellent album if you don’t yearn for a return to their past releases. It’s a serious, no-frills, alt rock album that seems to spend most of its time belting out catchy, mid-paced songs that try to prove how grown up we’ve all become. Except it’s much better than that makes it sound…

| 2.5 average | tellah | December 15th 16 | Hopes were high for this album since it seemed as if Yellowcard hit their stride with When
You're Through Thinking, Say Yes and Southern Air. Unfortunately, it's filled to the
brim with mediocre songs. The mix here (bass especially) isn't all that great, either. The ballads
on this album (and there are a lot) are either dull, or have extremely cringeworthy lyrics and
vocal melodies. I enjoy this band, but I would understand why their detractors would find Ryan
Key's vocals annoying if they only heard Lift a Sail. The band's solid instrumentation they
are known for saves this from being a disaster.

| 5.0 classic | 3waycrash | March 7th 16 | I always thought of each of Yellowcard's post-hiatus albums being sequels or albums that follow in the same vein as their pre-hiatus albums. Much like WYTTSY and Southern Air mirrors Paper Walls and Ocean Avenue respectively, Lift a Sail parallels Lights & Sounds. This album follows more of an "experimental" sound rather than the band's usual style of pop punk which makes for different tones and sounds than they've done in the past. Lights & Sounds clearly had new ideas behind it, but was done perhaps a bit too early in Yellowcard's career. With Lift a Sail the band is able to better hone in on what they may have aimed for creatively. The pace of the overall album is slower, but in its place the songs have more dynamics in sounds especially with the violin. The flow is a bit mixed with a more radio-friendly rock first half, and a more diverse and interesting back half. While it's not as strong as their other albums, it does offer a new and interesting direction for Yellowcard.

| 2.5 average | SoStellarMusic | June 11th 15 | I try not to be one of those people that just because a band changes it sound I would automatically assume it's bad. I like to give ever album a chance. Plus some bands change for the better like Pink Floyd or Alice in Chains (Yes we haven't forgotten about your glamor phase AIC). I've had 'Lift a Sail' on repeat for a little over a day now so I think I've given it more than a fair enough chance so here's the verdict: 'Lift a Sail' is a sound machine repetitive lyrical garbage. I get Yellowcard lost their great longtime drummer but did they seriously have to replace him with a drum machine??? However, I can't put all the blame on Yellowcard. This was their first album with the label Razor & Tie also know for amazing bands such as Chiodos, The Pretty Reckless, P.O.D., Finch, and All That Remains who are all recently signed with them. R&T didn't capture Yellowcard at their full potential. It was their responsibility to make sure this was a hit and they failed miserably at that. It was like their hearts weren't fully into this album, I mean Ryan usually give out such great lyrics but each songs was him spilling the same line over and over. I expect so much better on the next album and I do think THAT one will be the hit but this one was just a filler in between. I'll keep 'Lift a Sail' on the shelves for when I need music to listen to when I'm cleaning the house but for actually wanting to feel the music I'll leave that for another C.D.

| 3.5 great | tmagistrelli | October 3rd 14 | After two listens this dedicated Yellowcard fan finds "Lift A Sail" rejuvenated and invigorated at times, but heartless and trite at others. A mixed bag. Which is disappointing for a band as consistent as Yellowcard. Make Me So, One Bedroom, Illuminate, and My Mountain are highlights. Lowlights are Fragile and Dear and MKG, the latter is filled with enough falsettos to make OneRepublic fans swoon. May be a grower.
