How did this end up being so damn good? Combines britpop and shoegaze flavors with a good bit of dream pop. No Shows is an early highlight and the best songs are the mid tempo ones towards the tail end of the album like Drugstore Perfume.

Extremely impressed as well as surprised with how great this. It's, of course, a pleasure to hear Gerard's voice in something new again, but the songwriting is what really brings this to life. It's varied, vibrant, and...fun. Very fun.

A fantastic debut that easily walks the tightrope between several genres/influences, I found myself intrigued from start to finish. While a few songs felt out of place, the album as a finished product is something I can see myself returning to for multiple listens to come. Stoked to hear it played live!!!

After the teenagers scared the living shit out of him, Gerard Way did away with his melancholic, yet flattering past with My Chemical Romance and started anew. His solo debut album Hesitant Alien is surprisingly very good and sports dazzling production values from top to bottom. The songs are rousing and - whilst different from anything he's done with that other band - have an intriguing flavor to them.

There's some serious potential here, but most of the album falls just short of greatness, due to inconsistency. There's too much genre hopping, making the fact that Way hasn't found his style yet painfully obvious. That being said, the album is quite fun throughout, and tracks like Brother and No Shows prove that Way is capable of pulling off admirable solo work. The former, in particular, is considerably well-put together, and has a tone and energy that make Way sound more alive than he has in years. The solid production also helps the album sound more distinct and interesting, through the use of ambient effects and distortion included in many of the tracks. Overall, while the album has plenty of fun moments, Way's inexperience as a solo artist is often too apparent.
