Talons has had a few growing pains over the years. 2010's Hollow Realm introduced us to a more immediate Talons, for example, which was best on paper. It leapt into action from the get-go, only to lose its edge to dry production and questionable string arrangements. It all felt too quick, though- these guys are best when they take their time to get where they want to go, after all. And this characteristic is the best one to describe New Topographics, that it trades in the band's prior concision for a newfound longevity in sound. It can take awhile to get going, but it's got planned destination ahead- and functions as Talons' finest work yet.
