2.0 poor | Progmaster85 | December 20th 09 | I seriously don't get it. Just don't get it. Most of it sounds like:
"BLAH BLAH BLAH (emo-sounding pussy screams) BLAH BLAH BLAH, accompanied by some quirky drum fills, strange and awkward guitar riffs and then more BLAH BLAH BLAH YAAHHHH EMO SCREAMMS YELL YELLLLLL BLAHHHH BLAAHHHH and then it immediately shifts to a cleaner, more progressive style. That's about it.

5.0 classic | iarescientists | December 21st 06 | A dim-witted model/merman once said, "Moisture is the essence of wetness, and wetness is the essence of.....beauty."
I suppose he was right, because this, being one of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard, is soaked in brilliance. Brilliant lyrics, brilliant riffs, brilliant, emotional screaming. It may take a few listens to finally understand and digest all of the brilliance, but once you've accomplished this, there is no turning back.

3.0 good | AtavanHalen | October 25th 08 | First things first- this is not a user friendly record. Chances are you'll be like myself and have an initial bad reaction to the album. Most, however, have gone on to speak godlike praises of it.
Certainly, there is evidence of a band with a lot of potential here- "An Interview At The Ruins" is a particularly great display of what the band can do, featuring emphatic guitar, loud erratic drums and unexpected shifts in tone. The build-ups, changes in tempo and sudden explosions of full-band accompaniment makes for very interesting listening, certainly assisting it in standing out amongst their contemporaries. It is a redundant argument to oppose the genuine passion that has gone into this release, as well- despite the awful mix and production, this is certainly a finished product constructed with a lot of heart.
With this in mind, there is still undoubtedly a lot here that simply does not work- "Same Shade As Concrete" is decidedly awful and unlistenable for the most part, and both "Kill The Switch" and "A Crater to Cough In" are ridiculously overlong and pointlessly stretched, despite having some interesting sections.
The vocalists, too, have much room for improvement- not even gargantuan truckloads of emotion can stop the screams from predominantly sounding thin, uncomfortable and ugly, occasionally spoiling the song.
Without a doubt, As The Roots Undo is NOT a classic, hyperbole-inducing release that many build it up to be. Having said that, it's not as awful as I once thought it to be.

Anyway, still one of my favorite albums ever, so whatevs.

4.5 superb | TRMshadow | January 21st 10 | Love it or hate it, it is a landmark album for the "Screamo" genre. Give it a couple listens and if you don't like it now, try it again in a couple months... always keep an open mind.

5.0 classic | Iluvatar | June 25th 06 | So, Circle Takes the Square is rapidly becoming a favorite band of mine. They only have 13 true songs to even choose from, but every single one of those 13 songs is amazing in its own right. The strongest of those come from this, As the Roots Undo. It's epic, its incredibly emotional, it's technically stunning, and the lyrics are pure poetry. It's a triumph of recent times that should be required listening, if not required love.

2.5 average | Emim | October 14th 10 | This album comes across as empty, but not
intentionally. There is a strict disconnect
between the album and the listener. I suppose
the heart of the problem is that I don't "get"
it; the pretension and avant-garde vocals
irreparably degrade the music. As the Roots
Undo isn't so much an earnest musical
expression, as it is an experiment in excess
and indulgence. As I search for a metaphor for
this album, a single word comes to mind: faux.
It fits the album insofar as it is nothing that
hasn't been said better and more concisely,
without the affectation. Like many who use that
word for the sake of using that word, they aim
high yet hit low. Songs like "Kill the Switch"
show the best of Circle Takes the Square and
what they can be, while other tracks are
plagued by chaotic structuring, generally
horrendous vocals and rambling lyrical
concepts. To say I hate As the Roots Undo would
be a false (faux?) assessment. I enjoy what
this group does when they do it well. Sadly
though, Circle Takes the Square had too high of
aspirations and too low of execution.

5.0 classic | Justanothernimrod | August 27th 06 | At the start of the week, my basic opinion was that "Yeah I have that Crowquill track but I don't think much of it." Now, a few sputnik reccomendations and certain events later, I find it possibly one of the most exciting things I've ever listened to. Since the Sputnik listening party, suddenly, it has all made sense. CTTS and in particular, this album, work because every instrument, every sample, every scream, every lyric and every piece of emotion that has been poured into this record, WORKS. There's no other way to describe it. This does what Saetia - as much as I love them - could never do. This to me is like Post-Metal sped up on x50 speed. So when you take the intelligence and depth of Isis, and splash it against the attitude and emotion of Saetia, you have an incredible combination of music.
Sadly, this album has meant that I can't listen to one of my favourite Bands (November Coming Fire) straight afterwards, because in comparison, they sound really sludgy.

4.0 excellent | Pete | June 22nd 06 | This is one of my favourite emo/screamo albums - the epic feel and the emotional release of it really makes it the epitome of modern emo, at least to me. Frantic, grinding, tempo-shifting parts mixed with ambiently ominous build-ups, multi-layered vocals over a braod spectrum of styles - all in all, it's basically the recipe of good emo.
The only things that drag it down for me is its pretentiousness and the somewhat lackluster production (both in the flat sound and in the occasional untightness), although that's probbaly my untrue-emo-head side popping its head in.

While some of the more pedestrian minds on this reviewing site may scoff at such an audacious a priori judgment, a refined and sagacious mind such as my own can arrive at universal truths in the total absence of examination, through the rigorous science of deduction.

2.5 average | 00mee | October 28th 10 | Can never really recapture that point in which it finally clicked. It's still abrasive and raucous, but I can see every valley, every jarring riff, that once again, it's become as redundant as when I first listened to it. So then, what's the point? Yes rewarding, but all the same; might as well listen to something immediately like-able then spend weeks getting through torturous repeated listens.

0.0 | TAB | October 23rd 10 | overrated as fuck. all the performences here are sloppy, the production sucks, the dual vocals is used mainly as a gimmick, the musicianship and composition aren't up to par of other emo/screamo bands. go listen to off minor or some bullshit instead.

0.0 | Bitchfork | July 6th 10 | After going through mediocre riffs, poor vocals and dreadful exhibitions of noisy guitar noodling we come face-to-face with "Interview at the Ruins" which chugs along determinedly while still winding up an uneventful listen with pretense doused all over. After such a slow change of pace Circle Takes the Square are reborn like the character in the trite narrative that precedes the first mark of redemption: "Non-Objective Portrait of Karma." Gone are the trite archaisms from "Same Shade as Concrete" and the banal attempts at literary references and poetic verse "Crowquill." Gone are the boring "breaks" from the band's hardcore style (for examples: the "gravity didn't grant me the privelege of failure" part in "Crowquill," the nauseating attempt at indie on "In the Nervous Light of Sunday," which would have made a great, straightforward emo track without it). They adopt a more post-rock oriented style which, while done better by City of Caterpillar and several other bands, is still a welcome change The other tracks on As the Roots Undo lack a musical identity because they tried to pull off too much at once with mixed results. The rest of the tracks, however are adept with their use of dynamics and intensity, unlike the rather meandrous filler beforehand.

5.0 classic | Hatshepsut | October 9th 06 | This is one of my favorite albums of all time. It might be the craziness, it might be the lyrics, or it might be the drumming. But for one thing, I know it IS the emotion. This is classified under emo for a reason: it is pure emotion poured out onto one disc. It's pretty easy to feel these guys pour out their hearts. And i love it.

5.0 classic | Violents | September 15th 06 | I love this album to death for it's sheer intensity, and it's ambient moments. I love how the music moves to dramatically back and fourth, so it's almost as if you're on a thrill ride as you listen. The albums also has packaging that is worth the $12 alone. It's almost like treasure to the hands, but it is treasure to the ears.

1.5 very poor | McDiggitz | October 15th 10 | Garbage. This is just riff-chaos. The songs aren't songs, they are simply riffs thrown together. The songs do not flow what-so-ever. It just jumps from place to place. I couldn't enjoy any of it. If you think that just putting random riffs one after another is creative and ground breaking, go for it. I'll stick to music that sounds like it has an idea of what structure is.

0.0 | SeaAnemone | November 20th 09 | So I was writing a review for this fantastic new screamo album Maths - Descent, and writing all these great things about it I was inspired to put on Interview at the ruins and Kill the Switch quick. It grew into just forgetting about Maths and listening to the whole ATRU, just reminding me that this will not be surpassed. Things will come along similar to this, but it will never be surpassed in sheer tenacity and raw emotion that this so beautifully encompasses.

5.0 classic | immortalizepain | August 5th 12 | Insanely chaotic, it perfectly mixes post-rock, post-hardcore, screamo, and thrash into an understandable mess. The dual male-female vocals trading-off is possibly the strength of CTTS. Also, the instrumental work are top-notch.

4.0 excellent | DeskmaN | January 28th 12 | Excellent with some breathtaking moments, but it doesn't hit me as hard as it seems to with most people. 0.0 | OrangeHologram | September 11th 11 | At the time of writing, I honestly haven't had this album too long at all. My rating however, is based solely on how much the first 10 or so listens affected me. I doubted screamo at first; I still do. It's not a genre I actively listen to, and not one I intend to get heavily into either. But, "As The Roots Undo" was different. This was the first screamo album I was really able to get into, and it opened me up to a lot of other music, as well.

4.5 superb | Crimson Death | March 2nd 11 | I'm starting to appreciate where this album is coming from. 4.5 superb | iSkane | January 8th 11 | From all the comments I've been seeing, you either love this album, or hate it. Personally, I understand the perspective of each standing, however, I have enjoyed this album from the minute I first heard it. The songs seem to get longer as the album goes on and as the songs get longer, the songs get better. This album wouldn't work without the emotion that Circle Takes the Square put into it. If the singing and playing was flat, this album wouldn't be anymore than a "good." But CTtS shows us that they have what it takes to be considered among the top emo bands.

It's just so overly dramatic and silly that I can't help but laugh. Perhaps this is what the band wanted me to do; in which case, they have most definitely succeeded. Plus the constant drum smashing makes for good running music every now and then, though it's difficult to both run and laugh at the same time.
