Last year, In Flames showcased to fans new and old that they were still musically relevant at the midway point of this decade. With 2007's 'Fiction,' Dark Tranquillity meet - perhaps even surpass - sheer relevance in the industry. This album is somewhat of a hybrid between 'The Gallery,' 'Damage Done,' and 'Character,' which preceded this album. I say this because between 'Fiction' and 'Character,' one won't find very many glaring differences; in fact, the electronics and keyboard melodies are what make these two albums so memorable. Yet, there's enough crunch to bring to mind the other aforementioned albums. Songs like "Terminus (Where Death is Most Alive)" and "Nothing to No One" are incredibly catchy, and tracks such as "Misery's Crown" and "Icipher" exemplify the band's more melancholy, shadowy traits. Ultimately, fans of 'Character' will undoubtedly enjoy this album, whereas fans of the band's older material may not as much. However, in all, this album should go down as one of metal's best releases in 2007, because it's extremely beautiful, yet grippingly intense.

Melodeath with some electronic stuff added which actually worked in Character and works in this too, amazing quality songs (Terminus, Icipher, Misery's Crown, The Mudane and The Magic, all amazing tracks) and powerful growling which you can actually understand. With this release, Dark Tranquillity proves that they don't need constant experimenting to be as good as they are, seeing how this is simply Character part 2, and it's even better than Character.

It doesn't seem very often that a band almost touches a classic so long after releasing it, but that's exactly what Dark Tranquillity has done here. Twelve years after the essential melodic death metal album The Gallery, Fiction sees the band pouring every one of their strengths into 10 ridiculously good songs. Almost like an unintentional greatest hits, the ten songs here musically encapsulate everything that has and still makes DT such an amazing band. When it's all over (ending with their best closer since, well, The Gallery), this album serves as hope that Dark Tranquillity won't be burning out anytime soon. (although honestly, have they ever made us worry about that?)

This is my very first review for whoever stumbles upon it. Fiction is Dark Tranquillity reshaping their sound after their 2005 masterpiece, Character. The band takes their catchiness from that album, cuts down on the ferocity and introduces a new and refreshing sound to the unfortunately dwindling Gothenburg melodic death metal. Mikael Stanne's vocal performance is better however it would have been greatly appreciated if he returned with the high range in vocals that he teased in Character. He has potential to increase his vocal range however he decided to remain with his consistent put artistic growling that we have grown used to in Dark Tranquillity's albums. The guitars also adjust to the different but newer sound as well as the drums bass and keyboard. The production is much clearier and the keyboards add an atmospheric sound that accomodates the beautiful performances from the rest of the band. The opener, Nothing to noone, hit hard and clear with the message that Dark Tranquillity wants to inject freshness into the listener's ears. One of the best songs on the album is Blind at heart. This is a song I was waiting for displaying true Gothenburg sound and beautfiul keyboards adding melody as well as atmosphere as Mikael Stanne growls with passion. Another powerful track is Misery's Crown which reminds me of their 1999 album Projector where Dark Tranquillity surprised fans with long clean vocal sections. However there is nothing wrong with changing the sound or returning to it if it is done well. They succeed in Misery's Crown with beautiful keyboards, Stanne's singing and a short but complementary solo. Focus shift is another very strong track on this album bringing back the Gothenburg sound. The concluding song The Mundane and the Magic shows off its magnificence with beautiful piano sections and of course Nell Sigland's voice intertwining Mikael's performance to finish off the album with a bang allowing you to ponder if they will ever write such a well crafted album again.
Please judge and criticise my judgements on this album. English is not my first language and I would appreciate comments and what you feel and why. Of course this is to whoever stumbles upon this.

This is pretty boring. Basically all the songs sound the same, they also have no creativity with the music, riffs, or lyrics. They keep using the same riffs the entire song.
In Flames and Kalmah beat the crap out of DT.
DT needs to evolve their music for gods sake, they run out of riffs..

The first three songs on the album are monumental, but the latter of Fiction lives up to it, blending soft techno and classical piano with fiecre deadly guitar riffs so perfectly, they're on the same level as Opeth.

Yet another positive notch in a long and illustrious career for this band. I have been consistently impressed with each and every album, and this album proves no difference. Extremely solid, though a bit boring after a while. "Nothing to No One" and "Icipher" are great songs. The album as a whole is very well written, just nothing particularly catchy past the album's midway point.

Basically, if you like earlier Dark Tranquillity releases then you will like this one. And if you're a fan of the Gothenburg sound then you'll enjoy the sound of it being done right without sounding tiring or overdone. Review was right, this isn't much different from Character but the tracks don't blend together like some other melo-death bands.

This album has it all. Great production, awesome atmosphere, grabbing riffs and guitar work, remarkable vocals and excellent keyboard and programming parts. A really outstanding addition in DT's catalogue. Couldn't five it just because of Misery's Crown which I think is the only weak track.

There are some styles in metal music I`m not very comfortable with: f.e. metalcore, symphonic black or... melodic death. Even though, I must admit there are some good bands in every of these categories. After listening to "Fiction" I can say Dark Tranquility is one of such bands.

Dark Tranquillity smooth their sound and production over almost to a fault, giving Fiction a sense of refinement with a bit less edge than its two predecessors. The melodic part of melodic death metal is raised, the results being compelling if a couple songs too brief. Really, Fiction's best accomplishment is seeing the band maintain a command over their style that's been tuned to the point they reached here, moving forward without compromising their root sound.

ANOTHER MASTERPIECE BY THE MELODEATH GODS! All the songs on the album are great, but my top favorites are "Misery's crown", "The mundane and the magic", "Fucus shift", "Icipher", "The lesser faith" and "Terminus (when death is most alive)...One of the best Dark Tranquillity's albums, and my third favorite, behind "The Gallery" and "Damage Done"....

This was one of the first melodic death metal albums I had ever purchased. After hearing "Misery's Crown" on Pandora, I knew DT was something special. I bought it expecting what I had heard in other melodeath bands: okay lyrics paired with okay vocals and lots of flashy guitar. That was NOT it. The overall blend of keys adding a subtle touch of sweetness to the brutality on top was amazing. To this day, Fiction is still my favorite DT album, followed closely by Character.

Coupled with The Gallery as Dark Tranquility's masterpiece, this is a beautiful, soothing and yet haunting and crushing album that has one of the best guitar performances in its genre and a vocal performance to be proud of. The variety and consistency are two reasons to keep coming back to this album as it really is amazing from the opening drum and bass segment right through to the closure of the album. Definitely consider checking this one out as it rulez.

Very listenable, very melodic death metal. Dark Tranquillity are consistent in their style, the likes of which I'd never heard before and really enjoyed.
Considering I listen to very few growling vocals, I could quite easily follow what was being sung, and Mikael Stanne has a surprisingly good clean voice, demonstrated at the start of Misery's Crown.

I guess the gothenburg sound isn't really my thing. This album has some great songs, like Focus Shift and Inside the Particle Storm, but sometimes I feel like I'm listening to Lacuna Coil with harsh male vocals. I think I'll look into DT's early works, because I like the songs I've heard from them.

A solid release that proves to be as consistent as it is unspectacular. A few more catchy numbers and this may have entirely lived up to the hype. As it stands, Empty Me and Focus Shift remain my personal favourite cuts, and I'll certainly look to add some more Dark Tranquility to my collection - provided it's not quite full price.
