For years and years, Limp Bizkit guitarist and asylum warden Wes Borland was perhaps considered the nu/rap metal act's saving grace; if anything, people never gave two shits and a frivolous fuck about the red cap known as Fred Durst's expanding ego - and concentrated on the talent bestowed upon Wes. Borland's side project Black Light Burns comes tumbling down on our argumentative bodies with a satisfyingly creative debut album in Cruel Melody. Combining sharp, industrial sounds with an outsider-esque rock tone, I believe the record can do more than enough numbers on the likes of those who underestimated what an LB member can and can't do. The instrumentation is pulsating and literally turns heads, and Wes' vocal performance bears an uncanny resemblance to that of Trent Reznor - all while the former hangs on to his own identity, however. The mystic properties of Cruel Melody are nearly a sight for sore eyes, and a requiem for bloody earholes.

A few solid 4/5 tracks, but occasionally the lyrics could be better, the influences can be kind of obvious, and some hooks could've landed better. Instrumentally, this is pretty good. Guitars have a particular but comfortable style, textured well. Everyone holds their own, performance-wise. Familiar, but fresh enough to not be a throwaway.

Pretty awesome for Wes Borland to finally be putting out his own music after carrying the weight of Limp Bizkit after all those years. The downside w/ this album was how it wears it's influences on it's sleeves (thanks lead vocalist). A pretty decent effort all around. Gotta keep this band under my radar.

Grew constantly on me. Lie, Cruel Melody, Iodine Sky, i.e., I love every song. Borland knows how to get me.

Everyone knows that Wes Borland (so cool Trent Reznor once wanted him in NIN and he now plays with Marilyn Manson) was the ONLY one in Limp Bizkit with any kind of musical talent, so it's only natural that he's got to hone it first; experiment even. That's what Cruel Melody is. It bubbles with many ideas but never really grows into anything quite amazing. Saying that, it gets very interesting near the darkwave-ambient section at the end.
