This is pretty good, but I just can't pay attention to it for too long. It all kinds of blends together into one single plodding tempo and tone.

Clearing the Path to Ascend is a slow plodding doom album with enough else going on to stay entertaining.

Normally, it would be fair to write about YOB's going anew through their motions in this album and rate accordingly, but the importance of the Clearing The Path To Ascend album is that in "In Our Blood" and "Unmasking The Spectre", YOB deliver an updated rendition of the bluesy/drone-y doom metal first evidenced in Catharsis, the first major and sparsely mentioned (unfortunately) YOB album. On another note, the drone vibes revel in the album also due to the natural emergence of subtle guitar leads near the end of the album opener and "Nothing To Win", the tribal succession of riffs in the same tune (which brings in mind YOB's mid '00s sludgier behemoths) and of course the simple but utterly majestic, recurring guitar theme of the album closer "Marrow", which goes on and on for about 19 minutes, but does not wear off for one split moment. It goes without writing, but the band is (as always) stiff instrumentally, and Scheidt's clean vocals are wonderful.

This is a great record that only gets better with each listen. The last track is the most epic SOTY.

By bringing out more of a sludge and post metal sound and adding subtle prog and classic rock influences YOB create their best album in years. Easy contender for AOTY!

Clearing the Path to Ascend: This year I can also say that I?ve officially found the awe inspiring soul crushing power of doom. Yob was one of the bands that helped me wake up to this slow meandering style of metal. And I?d say on the surface this album, is just your typical monolithic doom release. All the songs are longer than the ten minute mark and feature riffs that could crush an elephant. It?s only when closing track Marrow plays that you can see the true genius behind this album that helps to separate it from the pack of other albums released this year. Marrow makes the three tracks the marched before it seem like the long lasting suffering before the ultimate catharsis of Marrow hits you with its innate beauty. ?It?s time to wake up.? Best tracks: Nothing to Win, In Our Blood, and Marrow.
