4.5 superb | niobium | July 1st 06 | By and large the most difficult Bungle album. After their first album, which was essentially demented circus metal, Mr. Bungle decided to truly go avant-garde with Disco Volante. Members of Mr. Bungle used their experiences with musicians such as John Zorn and William Winant as influences, and applied them here. Every one of the members has strengthened on their respective instrument, and Mike Patton offers possibly his greatest performance here. Genres are torn apart and reassembled as the band sees fit, and then torn apart again. A relentless, unforgetable experience, Disco Volante remains Mr. Bungle's greatest effort.

5.0 classic | Jared Floryan | October 22nd 14 | Every now and then, you're going to come across a coin with undeniably invigorating sides to it. Both Disco Volante and California - the final two official releases by avant-garde metal act Mr. Bungle - represent tails and heads respectively; the latter is the most cohesive and user-friendly Bungle recording, and the one many a Sputniker consider to be their magnum opus. Tails is obviously this release: a wild, varied effort which will require more than merely two listens and a shot of vodka mixed with an elephant's tusk. Mr. Bungle's second album shows these California men aiming to be as innovative as possible whilst allowing the record itself to become an hour-long experience that shan't be forgotten. Mike Patton's diverse vocal range comes in handy for Disco Volante, resulting in overall powerful performances on dizzying numbers such as the schizophrenic, yet beauteous thrash metal piece "Carry Stress In the Jaw". The other band members are neck-and-neck with the frontman, being able to provide a wide array of techniques like drum fills, more technologic effects which are prevalent on the Middle-Eastern techno track "Desert Search for Techno Allah" (as its title suggests), and one mean saxophone capable of enhancing the fun factor of "Platypus". The entirety of this offering is the equivalent of a war stallion having unprotected sex with an entourage of swarming locusts... Every last second of Disco Volante is so random (if slightly expected) that it starts turning into unadulterated perfection after some time has passed.

3.0 good | Chino smoking it up! | November 12th 20 | The first release was super disturbing (like I was actually inside the head of that fucked up
clown), this one unfortunately seemed interesting on experimentation and textures exploration, but
on other hand seems like some band's endless hidden track from late 90's.

5.0 classic | Polyethylene | January 2nd 13 | An alternately hilarious and terrifying avant-garde record of plodding death metal, schizoid jazz, sensual funk and eerie ambience. Never has a record had a more mysterious, haunting personality. Requires many a listen to make sense of it all, but it'll stick with you for life.

5.0 classic | Beinlausi | November 16th 09 | It's just everything you want in an album. And - often enough - a lifespan of styles in one "song".
Just very freaky, but all the evil in it cannot scare me away....I copied it on DAT in 1996, and have since then had my musical universe expanded by FAR....largely because of this!

4.5 superb | Splatch | October 13th 09 | A pretty frickin creepy album. I love it. It's just so darn unique. I can't stop listening to it. I don't recommend it to all though. It's probably a very acquired taste.

4.5 superb | gbowles | August 23rd 08 | this is one of the most inventive and re-interpretive cds in my collection, which is sort of a rare category but few bands pull this off. speed metal jazz sessions mix with supernatural film scores and avant garde jazz freakouts. made by a gradeschooler

4.0 excellent | SHOOTME | August 4th 08 | Mr. Bungle's least accessible effort, a truly avant grad album, providing Mr. Bungle's best overall band performance. The album, however, fails to match Mr. Bungle's first two efforts due to the lessening of the appearance of Michael Patton, Mr. Bungle's insanely fun frontman. His vocals are deeply missed throughout most of the album, and although the album is musically amazing and wild, it just isn't the same with more than half of the record without vocals. Mr. Bungle would learn from this mistake, and make a much more Patton oriented effort, and an overall better album, with California.

2.5 average | Mitch | August 14th 20 | A record that's eclectic for eclectic's sake. Sure, the debut was all over the place stylistically, but not once did it sound forced or pretentious. Sadly, I can't say the same about this record.
Bump |
3.5 great | GamamJ | June 16th 20 | Just slightly edges the debut as the better album imo. Completely different stylistically, but much more focused and cohesive sounding. While the debut tried convining way too much stuff imo, this one does mostly jazz fusion, and does it damn well. Still very weird and experimental, but not to the point of being overwhelming.

4.5 superb | EasterInTheBatcave | June 11th 16 | Disco Volante is an extremely difficult album, even going so far as to require outside research to fully understand it (the "Secret Song" at the end of "Carry Stress in the Jaw", "Merry Go Bye Bye"'s noisy ending, "Nothing"). The record is a completely different experience from its self-titled predecessor; where the former was a deranged circus metal extravaganza, this is an avant-garde mindbender. However, with that said, the two albums do share some qualities; namely, their ingenious melding of numerous, seemingly unrelated genres, and their superb performances. Disco Volante is not an easy listen, but it is a fantastic one. A bold, experimental tour de force. Founding member and saxophonist Theo Lengyel left the band after the release of this record, with Trevor Dunn attributing the parting to the man not growing with the rest of the band, and them running out of things for him to do.
Bump |
4.5 superb | Alabaster Jones | December 27th 15 | One of the strangest and interesting bands of their time, Mr. Bungle created some puzzling, yet gratifying, music across three albums. This, their sophomore full-length album, is unequivocally their most experimental, but is also their most inaccessible as a result. In fact, the nature of the album makes it very hard to pigeonhole into one genre. There's all sort of genres touched on this record, including experimental rock, punk, jazz, world, and progressive rock. A lot of it is pretty risky, like not having charismatic vocalist Mike Patton present on every track, and the constant time signature/genre changes that seem to happen at the drop of a hat. It's not really an album you can just listen to once and catch everything there is to hear. It's a pretty dense album, but one that rewards patient listening with a plethora of experimental greatness. Truly, there was never really a band quite like Bungle, and there isn't really a record like Disco Volante.

4.5 superb | icatchthirtythree | January 13th 14 | What a trip. Grows on you over time more and more as you find all the small nuances and follow the precisely detailed songs and parts begin to stick out. Mr. Bungle at their craziest but just as great as their other albums.
Bump |
0.0 | RYMsfullofscenesters | October 25th 13 | A surprising evolution considering they started out like an abhorrent mix of RHCP and Frank Zappa with nu-metal sprinkles. Here they're like a pop version of Nurse With Wound or John Zorn or something. Can you tell I'm not big on the 90s? Apparently the singer is sort of a big deal to chubby girls with septum piercings, so there's that too.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | AnEpicDeath | September 22nd 12 | Such a hard album to digest. Some tracks, like the "hidden" track following "Carry Stress In The Jaw" and the hidden track "Nothing" at the album's end require some external digging to understand. Some tracks and portions revel in noise and chaos seemingly for the sake of noise and chaos. Yet, for all its quirks, this is one of the most unique and experimental records out there. "Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz" stands out as an avante-garde masterpiece.
Bump |
2.5 average | TRMshadow | August 18th 12 | Clearly Mr. Patton is layin' down something I am just incapable of picking up on this one. The pessimist in me is wanting to say it's just freeform noodling taken to the N'th degree... but there's definitely something deeper going on... I just can't even begin to grasp it.
Bump |
4.5 superb | Type2Diabeetus | November 4th 11 | The second album in the classic Mr. Bungle trilogy. The band's music is more abstract and challenging here than it ever was, I you can believe that considering how abstract and challenging their first album is. Here, the band basically crams every genre that they could possibly think of into one album and make it seem easy to pull off. This album is unlike anything heard in music before or after, few bands would ever dare create music as complex as this
Bump |
5.0 classic | EatThatPhonebook | June 16th 10 | A classic of avant garde metal and RIO music. One of those albums that are really fun to listen to, not boring for one minute, always entertaining. However, if you do not like experimental music, stay away from Mr. Bungle, and from "Disco Volante", surely their magnum opus. In fact, after this they won't be able to each these high levels with the following "California".
