I don't understand why anyone would rate this album a classic, or even see it as that important. Yet, for some reason, it compels me to grant it that coveted title. The second proper Green Day outing, and still fresh with all that cocky teenage bitchery, Kerplunk is an absolute gem. Songs like 2000 LYA evoke an omniscient empathy one would believe is beyond any pop-punk band, while tongue-in-cheek Who Wrote Holden Caulfield and Dominated Love Slave reflect the group's obvious immaturity and penchant for the dramatic. While some may gripe about the production sounding like the inside of a trash can, I personally adore the raw sound Kerplunk delivers; it almost enhances the entire kids-in-the-basement-wanking mood that everyone loves at the ripe age of "stupid kid." In the face of its successors, Kerplunk will always play second fiddle in the eye of the public. As a melodious foray into the most idealistic time in a teenager's life, however, it has no equal.

While eariler greenday is pure punk, their is not much hear that really sets itself apart. remove the name attached and is its just a decent punk album.

A pretty nasty dive in quality towards the 2nd half, but the first half is spring/summer gold, as per the usual with most of the trio's earlier, 90's material

Their earliest stuff really is the purest form of punk. There was no generic, radio friendly, power pop, alternative crap. Just beautifully distorted guitar riffs with a strong focus on apathy. This is especially apparent in the song "Best Thing In Town." Everything about the way this album was produced just screams independent. With their new material they just sound overly manufactured.

A good raw album from the pioneers of pop punk, Green Day. Kerplunk is the first actual album released by the band, with their previous effort 1023 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours being a compilation of smaller EP's. Songs like 2000 Light Years Away, 80, and One For The Razorbacks show the beginnings of the structure Green Day would create and make famous in just a few years. In actuality, Kerplunk is just a raw Dookie, with cheaper production and not as mature songwriting. The original version of Welcome To Paradise does a great job of showing this, and the next version on Dookie would show the progression from album to album. A solid album and a must have for any Green Day fan.
