Angry Daniel Gildenlow gives a fuck you to America and commercialism. In the meanwhile, The Bee Gees, 50 Cent, Al Pacino, bros, hoes, homies, strippers, God, commercials, and kids with flowers in their hands all appear, each doing their part. It's a bleak version of the future. The prog year of 2007 would turn bleaker after the release of this record, with Porcupine Tree releasing their seminal mindfuck of "Fear of a Blank Planet", but lovers of doom and gloom anti-commercialism lyrics flavoured with experimentalism and musicianship beyond the limits of the Earth need to pick this up and have it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And the best thing of all is: the band don't want you to pay for it.

Bashing PoS for turning to nu-metal and mainstream influences for this album is, in many ways, like proclaiming you didn't understand it at all. Scarsick turns the broken aesthetics of the modern consumerism it denounces against that very culture - creating anomalies like Spitfall, the cynical anti-bragging rap song or Disco Queen, the nihilistic anti-fame dance song. They certainly do sacrifice quality for the sake of message here, and that's a shame, but the album mostly accomplishes what it sets out to do. All the while maintaining that distinct Pain of Salvation touch, with top-quality instrumentation and extended song structures throughout. "Kingdom of Loss" is the last great song of their prog era.

It's a mix of too many genres with no balance and corporation. Many songs in this album are based on one simple and recurring riff and the compostion just sounds too damn simple for Pain of Salvation (I miss the guitar solos from Remedy lane).rThe lyrics is just embarrassing. Daniel uses low and cheap language to pass his message about USA. And you know what? I've grown tired of his message. rIt has its downs and ups, but mostly downs such as: Spitfall (Pathetic imitation of Mike Patton), Cribcaged and Mrs. Modern Mother Mary. Everything else if fine somehow, I guess, but is that what we seek when we listen to POS? Mediocrity?
