Severely bashed for its tendency to step into unknown grands, GDoW is a whole different monster, different than what Mayhem released in the past. It is nothing like the primitive, amateurish stuff released in the 80s, nothing like DMDS, and different than WLA. The production is good for a black metal album, the songwriting is also very experimental, but somehow this is one of those albums that you could never make it reach its full potential in studio recording. GDoW shines the most in a live setting. I remember seeing live footage from Mayhem concerts with Maniac back in the 2000s when they were playing tracks from this album. It was as if the studio and live recordings were different songs. This album is quite unique among the black metal scene. Nothing like it has ever been replicated, not even by the same band. There are elements of spoken word, noise, drone and electronic bits mixed with traditional black metal, giving this record it own distinct personality. The guitars are the highlight on this record. No fillers here at all. If the studio record had the power and dynamics of the live renditions of these tracks, I would have given this a 4.5 rating. But since it doesn't, 3.5 will suffice.

People on this site really don't pay attention to Mayhem after first LP. What a shame.
This release demonstrates the exceptional talent of the band and the lyrical prowess of Maniac.

This record has a lot of great ideas scattered throughout but they are mostly hindered by the really horrible ideas that make up the album as well. Essentially this record has no consistency at all. The first five tracks all range from decent to fairly strong but then the album takes a strange turn after the spoken(whispered?)word and trip-hop tracks A Bloodsword and Colder Sun pts 1 & 2. They even decided to throw in some random moments of silence and labeled them as tracks... That really confused me... Skip It or just listen to the first half and shelve it.

Album starts just where Wolf`s Lair EP ends, but that`s the only similarity besides lyrical concept. "GDoW" is very brave experiment which is succesful only partly, and I understand this had to be great diasppointment for some older fans of band. Mainly because you won`t find nearly no classic black metal here. What you`ll find here is dark electronic for example, lot of tempo breaks and spoken (or maybe preached) vocals, and very clean production. First half of the album seems very impressive to me (tracks 1-5), I quite like accept dark electro in Bloodsword and a Colder Sun, but then I don`t find much interesting things hapenning and hollow feeling is enhanced by silence before end.
So or so, it`s still great album with some really fantastic moments.
