as if gdw didnt make abundantly clear mayhem is now an entirely different band, and in 2004 thats not a bad thing. thankfully the overprog fascination of gdw is satiated and this release harkens back to their kvlt origin days while very much creating a new sound, light yet satisfyingly intense bm with tasteful prog riff sections creatively and skillfully integrated, an unapolegetic and in your face bass, and maniac sounding just like his name implies. highlights in rape humanity with pride and the bass driven impious devious leper lord

Mayhem in a new light, somewhere between the ultra-slick and experimental Grand Declaration and Dom Sathanas. I enjoy the dark mechanical riffing of Blasphemer that leads the songs along with a very audible bass and crazy drumming from Hellhammer. Last track reminds me too much of the last album amd I didn?t like it, but the rest was huge.

Although I stressed in my review of GDoW that that album was underrated for reasons having to do with tone-deafness and narrow-mindedness, it seems that Mayhem did take some flak over it from the fans. 4 years later, they mostly ditched the avant-garde experimentation that made GDoW a unique offering, preferring a more straightforward, traditional take on black metal, but played in a very technical manner. It is as if they invented a new sub-sub-genre, technical black metal. The production is good, the songwriting is pretty inspired here as well showing that Blasphemer can do good in a more traditional environment as well and Maniac seems to be doing much better in the vocal department. Tracks such as My Death, Dark Night of the Soul, Slaughter of Dreams and the title track are among the highlights with Rape Humanity with Pride being solid. No filler tracks here either. A very good record, but not a classic.

Mayhem returns obediently back to black metal box, which was too small for them in precedent LP. Yes, they are still able to make extraordinary record, harsh and aggressive within very good production, but this approach seems to me to be too comfortable for such a talented musicians and little bit boring in the effect.
