the resurrected mayhem is, well, zombified. a brand new guitarist means completely new riffs, and from here on they would become prog infested, untrv rot mixed in with the black ichor. RIP dead, RIP euronymous

Love this! A proper transition album, still featuring classic DMDS era classic Black Metal Mayhem, but with features from their more avant-garde Grand Declaration days. Black metal atmosphere and coldness is combined with weird time-signatures and Blasphemer whitl-wind riffs to make for a fantastic experience.

Filling the shoes of an innovator is a tough job. Many fans consider Mayhem should have ended with the death of Euronymous. I am not one of them. While Euronymous is pretty much responsible for all the material recorded until his death, this EP proves that the other band members pretty much had an idea or two on how to refine and build up on the legacy left by Euronymous. Blasphemer may not be an innovator, but he certainly is a better guitar player that Euronymous, at least in terms of technique. Wolf's Lair Abyss is the missing link between the traditional, atmospheric debut LP and GDoW. It strikes a balance between the music in DMDS and the experimental GDoW. The first 2 tracks are a bit of a let-down, but the other 3 are flawless. Particularly Fall of Seraphs with its main riff. You can't get more inspired than that. A must have for any fan of black metal in general. And ignore the prattling of the vocal but small Mayhem audience who tell you that everything past DMDS is dross. They need an ear-fix.

The drum sound sucks and the guitar sound isn't amazing. But hey, it's Mayhem, so I suppose this is the best it's gonna get.

Here begins what can be called Blasphemer`s era of Mayhem. And it starts impressive, with this extremely aggressive and hateful EP, which is by that time with both feet deep in the orthodox black metal, but there are also some indications of incoming changes present there. I am not big fan of Maniac`s shrieks, but it quite fits here.

As the rebirth of Mayhem, this is great. They definitely did experiment with their sound some on this album, while still maintaining a little bit of the classic black metal sound. A lot of the newer more progressive side of Mayhem on this EP is literally an introduction into what would be expanded upon on the "Grand Declaration of War" album and "Chimera," just this EP is better.
