2014 seems to be Lunn's golden year. First, his phenomenal drum work on the new Saor record and now he releases his
best album under the Panopticon alias. 4.1/5

Roads To The North sees Austin refining this newfound artistic evolution he found himself in with Kentucky and releases a record that treats the listeners to a way more refined take on his bluegrass meets black metal formula. While Kentucky had some really cocophonous production where to me all the different influences really clashed more often than they worked, this album has all its instrumentation in the right place and features a pretty seamless blend of afformentioned bluegrass and post rock influenced black metal, but also sees the newer incorporation of melodic death metal as well. The folk music, along with some of the progressive rock and post rock passages that makes its way on here is performed to an absolute T and serves as a really beautiful, sweet and melodic counterpart to the heavier black metal instrumentation. This album is arguably the highest watermark for Panopticon, as it perfectly serves itself as a mission statement of what his music is about, and as a result is pretty much the album to check out for anyone who just wants to casually dip their toes in Austin's discography. Roads To The North is a really well performed and dynamically written album with lots of things to like for metal fans of different strains, and its not a surprise to me that its the most popular release to come out of this project so far.

It's really amazing what can make a man very inspired and with a genius above normal. Austin Lunn is there to prove that with just a head and no interference from studio and other members, that even in a complex genre like Black Metal, you can create pioneering and perfect sound destruction (in a good way). "Roads to the North" is beautiful, inspiring, transcendental and with a concrete extension in its development. It seems to me that i have discovered a band to listen for the next months.

"Roads To The North" sees Austin Lunn achieving considerable strides, further
synthesizing Americana Folk with Atmospheric Black Metal (epitomized on "Where Mountains
Pierce The Sky") into something all the more cohesive, adventurous, and -- as ever --
heartfelt.
The sweeping "The Sigh Of Summer", and the rousing and hopeful "Chase The Grain" are
powerful highlights. Arguably the most diverse outing in the genre's most wholesome
artist's catalog, Roads has a little of something for every Black Metal fan. - 4.5/5

Another eclectic black metal album from these guys. This one is a bit more streamlined than the bluegrass/country meets black metal of the previous release. On the other hand, there are still some of those influences scattered around the album. The drumming on this is awesome.
