I've only gotten into the whole post-metal, post-hardcore, post-rock, etc. style of music earlier this year. After listening to both ISIS and Neurosis, I started searching for similar bands (which has led me onto so many amazing bands I never would have experienced). My search led me to Made Out of Babies, but unfortunately I wasn't able to listen to them. That's when I seen a link for Battle of Mice and I was able to listen to the entire album.
Simply put, I was as blown away by A Day of Nights as I was by ISIS Oceanic and Neurosis Through Silver and Blood. Julie Christmas has such a beautiful voice that can become a very guttural, spine-tingly, real scream. Coupled with the slow buildups and atmospheric music, makes this one of my favorite albums of the year.

Post metal with a touch of doom that is extremely original and disturbing. Fronted by the female lead singer of noise rock band Made Out of Babies, and featuring members from Red Sparowes, Pere Ubu, and The Fugees this album is an excellent array of great influences and great talent. Highly recommended!

I still don't know what I have against female vocal leads in metal music, but I always wind up being disappointed... I imagine my bias derives from my expectations of feminine voices being more "angelic" (ex: Portishead's Dummy) than masculine voices. Finding such feminine (approving) voices/vocals in music is difficult enough, but finding such singers in a specific genre makes this task even more daunting & exhausting. Borderline-screamo to me sounds better than (actual) screamo, but this rating I feel is earned moreso due to the instrumental work provided by the rest of this group. For a goth album, this is a pretty heavy album but definitely not good enough (to me) for a repetitive listening.

The more I listen the more I love it. Julie Christmas's voice is absolutely one of the best in the business, and every other member contributes exceptionally to the sound, doom, sludge, and post can easily be heard and identified throughout the album. A well crafted standalone album.

At the Base of the Giants Throat might be the scariest song I've ever heard, but the rest of the album is relatively boring. The vocalist's voice ranges from monotonous to annoying.

A Day of Nights is an album I was unprepared for on the first listen. I was expecting some doom metal with some operatic femal vocals. I couldn't have been more wrong. Battle of Mice is a band that musically is very similar to say Isis or the Red Sparrowes, but their "x" factor is the superbly done femal vocals of Julie Christmas. She speaks in the most innocent and child like tone ever while reciting some truely disturbing lyrics. Sometimes the lyrics don't even seem to make sense but at the same time you feel uneasy hearing them, almost like you shouldn't be listening in on what she's saying. Then there's her otherside where she gives some of the most deafening and emotional yells ever. It's a powerful performance by miss Christmas and I gotta say that without her this may have just been an average instrumental album. So I reccomend this to anyone looking for some eerie and unsetteling tunes, just don't listen to it alone in the dark k?
