Another small step forward for these symphonic death metal masters. This will definitely take a few listens to set in, but it's a pretty great release and will definitely appeal to those that liked their previous releases.

Aight grandiloquent symphodeath that mostly manages to not be too cheesy - some of these symphonic passages sound like the OST from Attack of the Clones.

'Tis a shame this is Fotis Benardo's last album with SF because he really shines on this one, putting forth the best drum performance in their discography up to this point. A more focused offering than The Great Mass, they continue to refine their cinematic death metal vibe with a great emphasis on borderline doomy and groovy riffing mixed in amongst the usual blast onslaughts.

The Great Mass was one of my favourite records of 2011, so naturally my expectations for Titan were pretty high. Unfortunately, in case you couldn't tell from my rating, the record did not live up to them. The problem isn't with the performances, which are (aside from a couple of subpar vocal moments) spot on, or the production, which is once again excellent. No: the issue is the songwriting. Most of the songs are directionless and lack anything distinctive, which causes the whole album to run together. There is no "Pyramid God" or "Oceans of Grey" this time around. In fact, I'd be hard-pressed to point out any stand-out moments, because the only moments that stood out were those aforementioned vocal hiccups (such as the chanting on "Burn"). The almost total lack of clean vocals hurts the album too. Disappointing.

Titan is an great record if its judged on its own, that explains my rating, but Sepctiflesh are beginning to feel repetitive from one record to the other. It is absolutley true that they discovered an excellent formula, and that they are probably the best band doing what they do, but that doesn't mean that they should play it safe on every record they do, because for me even if Titan is great and epic just as its two predecessors, it doesn't break any new ground for the band's sound. Communion, The Great Mass and Titan could have been released in any order and you wouldn't feel the difference in the sound progression and that's my main concern towards this album. Aside from that it is quite dense in terms of sound and requires a lot of the listener, because is very difficult to reach the end with the same energy with which one starts to listen.

Titan's biggest flaw is that it succeeds an album, in which everything that is Septicflesh was almost perfected. Leaving aside the increased complexity in song structures which does not impose a positive or negative effect overall, the album follows the same recipe used to make The Great Mass, yet it pales in comparison. The above being said and contrary to the overly negative impact of the singles posted prior to the album's release, Titan is an album of merit, but my fellow countrymen need to reshuffle the deck in albums to come.
