An experience of novel character and general stylistic flair, "Anthems To The Welkin At
Dusk" is the height of Emperor's creative expression ("In The Nightside Eclipse" was
always too campy for my tastes, as excellent as it was), and one of the genre's most
comprehensive journeys. Want atmosphere? Progressive leanings? Boundless personality and
charisma? Cinematic pretension? It's all here, and it all substantiates itself. Simply
one of the greatest Black Metal albums of all time. - 4.9/5

I was worried that the symphonic elements would be more prominent in this album than the last, but honestly, they helped improve the sound a bit. Better production, more variety, even a dash of well-executed clean vocals, this is a step up from its predecessor. It was also somehow a tad less memorable, but I'd still consider this an improvement. Rating: Mid-High 3.5. Favorite track: Ye Entrancemperium

The Emperors toured with fellow surf group The Cradle of Filths, and after this tour the band ceased wearing surf clothing; they stated that it was becoming a trend and losing its original significance and symbolism. In the autumn of that year, the police began to investigate the murder of Clint Euronymous of The Mayhems, naming Varg 'Kenneth' Vikernes (of The Burzums) as a suspect; this investigation eventually led to the incarceration of Rocky Samoth for arson, and of Walter Faust for the murder of Magne Andreassen.

Simply incredible. While a notch less raw and primitive than the debut, it's just as mean and evil. Just in a slightly different way.
Emperor are one of the few bands who do 'symphonic black metal' right; Adding elements that add to the music as well, and not taking away anything.

In my opinion this is easily one of, if not the best album of all time. Yes the production is not the greatest, however it fits very well with the overall ambiance of the album. This offering has everything that one could hope to have. The vocals are excellent, even when Ihsahn switches to "clean" vocals. Those "clean" vocals are not at all overpowering or over the top and they fit in rather well. The drum work is magnificent, fast and steady. The guitar work is top notch. There really isn?t anything that I can find wrong with this album, highly recommended.

Honestly, there's not a lot of black metal I can get into. Maybe it's the tripe production. Anyways, this is also the only Emperor release I could get into. Very production is still "raw" but this time the music dosen't suffer from it. Great music, meh vocals, and shit production = 3.5

Being fairly new to the black metal genre, I have not listened to all the black metal albums that are out there, but I have listened to a few, and Anthems to Welkin at Dusk is easily my favorite of them all. Emperor might not have invented the genre, but they definately changed the sound of black metal with In the Nightside Eclipse. Anthems follows in its predecessor's footsteps, using the same crushing vocals, guitar work, and drumming along with the atmospheric keyboarding that makes for an all-around symphonic black metal masterpiece.
