It sounds like the wind or a wave, a lonely breath from the lips of a non-existent god,
exhaled over a lost and distant land coming to crash upon a beautiful forgotten tundra. It
aches. It bleeds. As the time passes, the breeze turns into a fluttering whisper, gently
beckoning to follow. Where? Even the wind itself is not sure the exact path that lays before
it, but it knows where it wants to be. Somewhere close but impossibly far away. Awash in its
own echoes, it resounds in a chilling glow; an embrace that holds itself in a comfortable
calm yet showing bare the indomitable fury within. This is Pure Holocaust. This is Immortal.
It is a perfect microcosm all of our personal experiences, elegantly pieced in a tightly
wound, half hour long ball of time that seems to pass effortlessly in an all too short
instant. Pure Holocaust is the despair in wanting, in needing something more. Something to
complete you. To complete me. To complete us as people, as human beings. Its dark core of
nihilistic rage is masked in the blizzards and coldness of our own exteriors, our own masks,
yearning to not only feel the wintermoon on our untouched skin, but to let it sink in and
freeze the heart which we fear the most. It is beautiful anguish. It cascades and falls in
the immediate pulse of the drum work that is always lurking, always pacing to break through
the frostbitten expanse of the constant sea of distorted guitars. Its mournful vocals of
Abbath, the soul we all share, alive in our own personal pains, transcending and plummeting
on our own accord, just wanting to be saved from ourselves.

Pure Holocaust is exactly what you think of when you think about good black metal. All of the instruments sound great, though the bass is a bit quiet.

A really, really great album of raw black metal by Immortal.
They hit the black metal scene like a meteor with their second LP Pure Holocaust.
The best single element is definitely the drumming, which is just superb, incredibly fast
and with some variation, too (enough for black metal, personally). I'm just annoyed by the
fact that I really don't know who did the drumming!!
Most people say it was Abbath who was behind the kit when recording, but there's also
statemets that it couldn't be him. Nevertheless, Abbath's vocal performance is great,
exactly as it should be in black metal. Some say his voice is annoying on this album, for me it isn't. Demonaz does his job very well as well, not anything complex (as expected
in ol' skool black) but the riffing is fast and very effective, and there's both maniac fast and slow, evil riffs.
Still, it's purely the songwriting and atmosphere that are the best things. And that's what
counts, especially in black metal. Album loses its half a point for being a little too
short. While I have nothing against short (excellent) albums, some songs could've been a
tiny bit longer. It's still great that the band didn't include anything even mediocre
material on the album just to make it longer.
Different, but just as essential as At the Heart of Winter.

Pure Holocaust is a solid old school black metal record but it doesn't offer up anything really that fantastic. I actually really like the production on this record. It is raw but not so raw that it's a chore to decipher what the hell you are even listening to... *cough* darkthrone *cough*. The drums are actually fairly solid on this album also. Immortal only got better from here but I still come back to this one once in awhile.

For the most part, the guitars and even drums don't function rhythmically as much as they "flow" and suggest Mahlerian movement & pathos. Truly spacey music but with an obvious militance and yearning for ancient values.

Compared to some of the Black Metal bands coming out of Norway around this time of the second wave, Immortal does not compare on this album. There is little variation on this album making it boring in a sense. It is just average Black Metal.

Immortal at their most straight up speed based and aggressive writing, before the band would experiment with more of a thrash sound and this is rightly considered a great of the black metal genre as it truly is a fantastic release with the blistering pace and insanely fast tremolo picked riffs that never fail to amaze a listener.
