I naively expected the most-streamed album in the world for 2014 to be, at least, enjoyable. It's mostly a white bloke who cries and strums his guitar. Apart from the played-to-death singles, it's mostly inoffensive and bland folk pop. I'm sure he's a good lad tho.

On retrospect it holds up quite well. Sheeran hadn't yet collapsed into the drivel of a dozen "Perfects" and "Thinking Out Louds" yet so it comes off and completely authentic. It's still very much pop, but there is that authenticity to it which adds to every track. "Don't", "Sing", "Bloodstream", hell even the mega hits "Photograph" and "Thinking Out Loud" are solid when taken on their own outside of their absurd popularity.

An uneven effort. X marks a departure from Ed's balladish roots and it makes a much more intriguing listen, but in the end, there isn't that will leave an impression on you... Photograph is an easy indicator of how average the album would sound. And, well, it is. Some songs do stand out, such as I'm A Mess & Sing.

I like Ed Sheeran in general but most of this album is forgettable. Most of the softer songs here are really excellent, much like the stuff on +. Most of the more pop focused songs are at least fun if uninspired. Some of them I find to be really quite good, "Don't" and "I'm a Mess" for example.

Sing wasn't bad, it actually had a great groove and a funky vibe to it. Hope the rest of the
album sounds as good, I mean, dude has talent, he just wasted it on "+" with cliche ballads
and harmless commercial love songs.
