I can think of no better example of everything wrong with modern melodic death metal than Arch Enemy, and War Eternal is just another album that, with 13 tracks, overstays a welcome that wasn't really there to begin with.

Not as bad as their last album, but definitely still not very interesting. Amott still refuses to
change up his songwriting style at all, and Alissa's voice also only keeps the status quo and
doesn't add much to the band that wasn't already there.
Her clean vocals make an appearance on, I believe, one track and are a nice addition to the
background there, but don't make a significant enough impact to really be noteworthy by
themselves. There's also a bit more keyboard work here than before, but even that can't make up
for the lack of original songwriting, interesting riffs, choruses, and vocal melodies.
While not as bad as their last album, at a mere 39 minutes this still feels like an absolute chore
to sit through. This is about as bland-and-cookie-cutter-without-being-outwardly-offensive as you
can get.
Do yourself a favor and just listen to the new Insomnium instead.

It's not a bad album by any stretch and this is my first tie listening to Arch Enemy after following Alissa's move from The Agonist so there may be much better older albums but for what I know, it's not a bad album. It's not that great either though. There are many moments which seem a little stale/predictable for the melodeath genre and plenty of times in the songs where I think "this is the perfect time for Alissa to come in with some cleans" but nothing and the screams just don't feel right in those spots. Introducing cleans in Arch Enemy would be a risk, yes, but I reckon it could pay off and shake things up a bit.

With former The Agonist frontwoman Alissa White-Gluz stepping up to the podium of black ashes, you would expect new things to be brought to this rusty table. Lo and behold, War Eternal sustains casualties due to how restrained most of the compositions on this album are, thanks to Michael Amott's method of hogging the songwriting spotlight and barely letting anyone else in Arch Enemy contribute to said process. Alissa doesn't sound nearly as interesting, presumably because she hardly utilizes her operatic clean vocals just to add on to the atmosphere, or make up for how dull the overall riffage is. If you're either a big fan of the melodic death metal genre or enjoy Arch Enemy's work in general, you could find something to like about War Eternal. As it stands, however, the album isn't so much bad as it is plain boring.

disregarding the lame ass lyrics they adhere to, alyssa has singing talent. riffs seem recast along with their new singer despite being usual ae fare with amotts diddling everywhere, and cant say i hate tracks like never forgive, title, pages, name, or avalanche. 5 decentish to good tracks not brought too far down by the more fillery songs, and thus a 3 it will be

I never understood this irrational contempt aimed at this album; it's easily one of their best
since the Liiva era. It's breaks free from the rinse and repeat formula every album since Wages of
Sin was bound to and dips its toes in the chaos that made the first three AE albums classic. Sure,
there are a few standard tracks, but there's also a palpable energy and excitement that up to this
point, had long since been lost.

I'd like to thank the Sputnik community for downrating this record. I ended up being very pleasantly surprised by just how much this record rips. It may not be the most original thing ever, but there's a ton of great riffs and Alissa is a worthy successor to Angela Gossow.

Gave it 2 only cause their are 2-3 good songs . The new singer is BIG mistake IMO , Didn't
like her on The Agonist and don't like her on Arch Enemy . Also the songs are much more
heavier and I don't like it . 3 years of waiting to get this weird album...
