I can't claim to know anything about why Trophy Scars make the music they do. I want to say something cliche like "Trophy Scars set out to save rock music, and fucking blow that goal away" but in reality they probably just had a shitload of great ideas, recorded them all, and made an immaculate record. This is the culmination of what the band has been working towards since "Bad Luck", and it's goddamn fantastic. No qualms giving this a classic rating.

Holy Vacants may be the greatest musical achievement of my lifetime thus far. The album continuously
dishes out moments that illicit everything from shivers to damn near tears. Qeres goes balls to the wall
and sees the return of Jerry Jones' Converge-esque screaming freak outs, Gutted and Chicago
Typewriter just drip with tangible resentment and bitterness, and Hagiophobia still rocks the fuck out
even after more or less staying on repeat since February for me. Archangel and Burning Mirror embody
everything that Trophy Scars is and have been working towards since Darts to the Sea and Hospital
Music first fucked my ear drums into submission years ago. And then there's Everything Disappearing.
Jfc. This is the easiest 5 I've ever given, and it somehow not only met, but exceeded every expectation
and bit of hype I had built up for this release.

The best bluesy record of this past decade. While beforehand the blues additions were mere, well, additions, now it feels like the post-hardcore and prog touches are built on top of the muddy twelve-bar chords. The gritty and smoky vocals may not be to everyone's taste, but they add intensity to the band's stellar musicianship. Fortunately for those who do not dig Tom Waits-grimy-like vocals, the female guest vocals are gorgeous and add a more spiritual and calm atmosphere to the "hell yeah, gimme that Jack" vibe (the end of Vertigo is a good example). On top of that, they granted us with SOTD-material with "Everything Disappearing". Then again, one of my favourite records of this decade is pretty obvious concerning its influences (maybe the album that most importantly shaped the past decade's rock bands: Darkness in the Edge of Town, Tom Waits as well as some classic rock) but manages to create a unique sound. Nothing's lost, nothing is created, and everything is transformed.

Bad drum production (way too plastic) and, due to their loose structures, a lot of the songs run together, like melted ice cream-- it's still delicious, but it's hard to eat and better if it's solid. However, the uniqueness of the band's sound and the fantastic musicianship are huge pluses, and I love the strings.

Nearly everything about Holy Vacants is done miraculously whilst holding a great chunk of realism, in spite of the kinda outlandish theme presented. The frontman's gritty tone of voice resonates with the gorgeous musicianship beautifully; speaking of the instrumentation here, each member does all that they can to incorporate other elements into Trophy Scars' colorful post-hardcore sound such as blues and some sort of progressive music, without losing flow nor concentration. This album is flawless save for the mixing process, but even the recording quality's minor oddities can blend in well enough with the material - as far-fetched as this might seem. A word of (probably) useless advice: go through this entire record and imagine yourself sleeping inside a meteor drifting by the sempiternal sea.

I was kinda disappointed with this album. I loved the last 2 EPs and was super looking forward to it, but when it comes down to it I think too many ideas, both musicially and lyrically, from those EPs were just rehashed. It was a good album but I just wanted the band to expand on the sound they had been crafting rather than just iterating on it. I'm also not sure if they really have enough ideas to fill out the album. It just felt like too much the same all around. Maybe it'll grow on me. Never Born, Never Dead certainly did. EDIT: After a few listens, I'm happy to say it grew on me.
