With each new release I am in an increasingly smaller minority of people who above all other releases appreciate Clipping.'s debut the most. Now, I do not think this is their most accomplished record or their "best" ('that label is up for a long and tedious debate). This album is the trio's most poignant possible introduction. Had it not been for my infatuation with this, I'd have never believed the hype behind their follow-ups.

On repeated listens it loses a lot of the edge that drew me to it in the first place; when the beats don't sound like early 90's NIN songs they sound listless or confused, and when the flows seem like they're even keyed in to a rhythm, they too tend to seem dispassionate--and not intentionally so, as a way to serve the music. I think in time this project could develop into something interesting, but now it's just kind of average for me. rAlso, the alarm clock song. Ugh.

Some really awesome tracks on here (Work Work, Summertime), but also a lot of stuff that overstays its welcome - when the hooks lose their strength, entire tracks can feel bloated. (Although 'Story 2' is possibly the best thing on here, and has no hook, so clipping definitely has it in them to do better.)

Much more accessible than their prior output, and mixing in a lot more elements from more conventional or even mainstream hip-hop - see the autotuned anthemic chorus on 6. This works well in places like 2, 5 or the quite bouncy 10, but also not on other tracks. 3 is a bit annoying, 8 is very annoying, and 12 is boring. The album outro resembles the experimenting of their early stuff the best. This is good, but it didn't captivate me, and it feels to me like a band still seeking its direction. 3.4

It took me a bit longer to get the feel of this project and I still feel the features on this are garbage, but Clipping. is definitely something to check out if you want something more challenging to listen to. It's glitchy, chaotic and a fuck ton of fun.

Noisy, experimental, and featuring some really great lyrics, CLPPNG is one of my favourite records of the year. I love the unorthodox instrumentation (the alarm clock on "Get Up," the metallic clangs and chainsaw samples on "Body & Blood," "Work Work"'s glassy, glitchy backing), the lyrics (as aforementioned), and the production. The noise track which closes the record ("Williams Mix") is really awesome too. Though there a couple of overlong or otherwise underwhelming songs, CLPPNG is still an excellent release.

This album had a lot of potential. It's a 2.5-3 with a lot of interesting ideas displayed and potential but only some of it seeps through the cracks of mediocrity

After a tone of listens and a long time to think about this album, I think this album is fantastic. It has some of the best hip-hop songs of the year, reaching a high point with Story 2. Which is perhaps my favourite song of the year. The production overall is noisy, textured and really professionally put together. Every timbre sounds like it has been crafted by someone who really knows what they are doing, and is striving to create an original sound. rThe rapping for the most part is fantastic, equal parts dark storytelling, gangster bravado, and surrealism. But it does lead to my only fault with the album which unfortunately takes a large toll on my enjoyment of it. The two tracks, 'Summertime' and 'Tonight' are almost unlistenable because of the really awkward choruses and sub par lyricism. Which is a shame, because I could see this being the 'Teethed Glory and injury' of hip hop in 2014. But as it stands, the remaining tracks are so strong that I can't give this anything less than a 4.
