This owes as much to alt-metal (Cave-In, Failure) as it does to the trendy shoegaze bm scene. However, it's totally it's own entity and getting rid of Neige just makes this better.

lantlos change the blackgaze scene game! taking cues from bands like Deftones, Hum and Jesu adding alternative rock and post-rock sounds on top of their lush heavy roots.

Lantlos, now without Neige in the band, proceed to move away from their black metal sound in favor of a
heavier style of shoegaze. While .neon is still superior, Lantlos managed to make their move away from
blackgaze to metal-rooted style shoegaze with much more successful results than their contemporary Alcest.
Pretty good stuff.

Lantlos started moving away from blackgaze and more into conventional post-metal with shoegaze influences on Agape, and this is definitely the finalization of that progress. Removing harsh vocals altogether along with the "djenty" influences here and there gives this a very unique brand of post-metal that I haven't heard before. It was a HUGE mistake to not include "Melting Sun VII" in the standard version of the album, but for me it's the official closer.

Although Neige left the band at this point, this might be the band's best album. The departure caused the band to drop all things black metal to focus on a shoegazing post-rock formula. Crescendos and soothing build up work together to create a lush atmosphere that perfectly reflects in the album cover, although some sludgy tones appear here and there. Music for summer walks.

Lantlos has been a name I have seen a lot when I've dug into blackgaze, but I had never listened to one of their albums until now. Melting Sun is a beautiful, ethereal piece that makes me feel like I'm standing in the rain on a warm day. It has a brightness I always love in records like this, but never loses the hints of black metal heaviness. I really enjoyed this record, and I'm excited to dig into Lantlos's whole catalog.

Lantlos is a frustrating band. They have incredible strengths, but persistent flaws in album and song structure that just break the deal for me on album format. This one does feel like their magnum opus though, moving away
from relatively conventional bm+post-rock to offer a splendid and quite unique mix of post-stuff, bm, dreamy guitars, djenty-nu-metallish-core riffing (don't @me) especially on 2 and 4, a blend which really could have been
special and is brilliantly done. The problem is that the album's progression is extremely gradual and linear, the record feeling like one long continuum with no real peaks, and falls flat on the low energy 6 which I saw
coming. I don't ask for a grand finale on every album, but the nice, broody instrumental 5 would have been a far better conclusion imo, despite 6 offering superb tones in the intro especially, as 6 takes so much time to pick
up and really feels like it prolongs things unecessarily. 1 also has a delightful intro tone that gets you right into the album and has some fantastic guitar parts after quite cliche an entry, but also displays the second
major flaw of the album: low energy, passable but never great or compelling vocals, on top of the excessively slow and gradual progression. 2's entry is far stronger, vast and glorious, and despite the vocals the song is a
highlight, with also the grand reprise at 4:50. 3 honestly I didnt take notes on because you can hardly notice song changes with this thing. And then 4 again with its fat riffage is another highlight. A good but frustrating

I know I'm going to get hate for saying this but this album is fucking boring. I understand this is shoegaze and not black metal but I still found this extremely sleep inducing. There are some stellar guitar parts sprinkled here but the songs seem to blend into one another making it hard to realize when the song you're listening has ended. This could have been a really good album but the lack of variety from song to song and the riduculous lengths they all have make this an album I would only listen to if I were getting ready to go to bed.
