There's something about Opeth's first two albums that hits me unlike any other music I've ever heard. It's difficult to put into words how and why. Each song encompasses a whole spectrum of emotions into an intense constellation of progressive riffs. If extreme metal could ever be "spiritual" in a positive, non-religious way, Orchid will be the album that those bands model themselves after. The production was rough back then - the guitars were overly crunchy, the bass was a bit prominent, the drums were poorly mixed, and Mikael's voice was not yet at its peak. But listening to the sheer genius of the songwriting that went into the making of Orchid, those things quickly become mear minor technical difficulties. For well over an hour it's almost impossible not to enjoy the Swedish melodic metal harmonies, incredible folk acoustic guitars, and versatile vocal performances on the debut of a band that would later change the face of extreme metal.

It's not a bad album by any means, but it lacks a cohesive quality that makes their latter
material so enjoyable. Dynamic changes in songs feel less like logical progressions, and more like
a bunch of ideas stiched together, with little thought put into their flow. Despite this, In The
Mist She Was Standing and Under The Weeping Moon are definite highlights.

Having got into Opeth around the time between Watershed and Heritage it has taken me a while to get around to listening to Orchid, their first album. It is of course very different to current, modern Opeth, but for me there is a lot like with this album. First off the production is quite raw, especially the vocals. There is also a lot less clean singing here, it is mostly harsh vocals, and has more in common with forms of black metal. Instrumentally the album is fantastic, the guitar work especially is consistent throughout, swapping between crushing riffs and haunting melodies. This is the area that reminds you that this is an Opeth album. There is also the piano instrumental of Silhouette which turned into a personal favourite. Songs to check out: Under the Weeping Moon, In Mist She Was Standing, The Twilight is My Robe.

Describing 'Orchid' with one word, I'd go with: elegant. I loved the old-schoolish (yet clear) sound, the slower sections, and the sweet guitar tone. I think it is a bit lengthy, but otherwise very pleasant album. Perhaps a grower?

Simply epic. Orchid possesses an exquisite atmosphere unlike all other atmospheric metal records, with harmonizing guitars that companion each other like brothers, drums that know just when to kick in the double bass, and solos and acoustic guitars that catapult the sound to another dimension.

Opeth's debut is perennially underrated. Yes, the songs are basically riff parades, but they are thoughtful riff parades; the songs progress logically, with feeling, and the riffs themselves are of an incredibly high-caliber ("In the Mist She Was Standing"). The other excursions work too (piano solo "Silhouette," performed by drummer Anders Nordin, who reportedly recorded it in but a few takes due to time constraints). The production, courtesy of Dan Swano, is rougher than the band's usual, but this semi-black metal aesthetic provides welcome grit to the proceedings. The performances would become tighter on subsequent releases, but there is creativity and boldness here which provide Orchid a majestic, engaging air.

What tilts Orchid to being Opeth's masterpiece in my eyes is how superbly it flows from top to bottom. Without a doubt their most diverse record, you can't go wrong with songs like "The Apostle in Triumph", "In the Mist She Was Standing" and "The Twilight is My Robe". Essential modern-day prog-metal.

Although not as technically polished as its successors, "Orchid" was an astounding debut for Opeth, marking the birth of a unique sound that would become synonymous with the band, and setting the tone for their future endeavors. The biggest highlights on this record are the epic 14-minute opus "In Mist She Was Standing", followed by the all-piano "Silhouette", then "The Twilight is My Robe" and the ever-triumphant finale, aptly titled "The Apostle in Triumph". Multiple tracks on this record feature a fine balance between raw death metal brutality and beautiful acoustic-driven calmness. These traits are illuminated in a brilliant fashion thanks to melodic metal harmonies, folk-influenced guitar work, and Mikael Akerfeldt's diverse vocal range that goes from clean singing all the way down to growls. All that said, this is one progressive metal romp that will captivate many upon the first listen.

While not quite as bad as its ridiculous successor, Orchid definitely suffers from the same syndrome. Small gleams of light such as the acoustic passage in The Twilight Is My Robe and a few parts of Forest Of October modestly reveal themselves in an otherwise pitch black mess of mindless riffing but it's never really enough to justify entire songs. I wonder what took Mr. Akerfeldt two albums to realize why stacking riffs on top of each other until the song ends isn't really an all that great songwriting formula.

Though perhaps lacking that little something that would've pushed this album past a 4.5 and into the realms of (more) excellence, Orchid serves as an incredible launching ground for Opeth's specific style of work. These are the less than humble beginnings for the progressive death metal pioneers, and though more of the focus remains on the death aspects of the music, there are still hints of the influences that would come to dominate Opeth's later body of work.

Being a hugely obsessive and ignorant Opeth fan, I'd have easily given every song on this album much higher scores. This is my least favourite release by Opeth, but it is still to this day ahead of most death metal bands in terms of experimentation and forward-thinking songrwiriting. It's very basic compared to other albums but still has the same captivating effect as their other albums.
