I loved it on the first listen and it only grew on me after that. This shit is classic. For
me, it all comes down to chemistry. First and foremost, Freddie Gibbs ripples flawlessly
across these groovy-ass non-quantized Madlib beats with his stop-and-start double time flow.
But even more than that, Gibbs' gangster-hyperrealism paired with these eccentric, jazzy
beats takes you on a trip in a larger-than-life alternate universe called Gary, Indiana.
Gibbs is nowhere near the comic book character that MF Doom is, but the effect is
surprisingly similar.
While the beats are such a clear upgrade, Gibbs also made a big improvement in the feature
department. It's something that has held all of his past records back, and he steps up in a
big way with features from Danny Brown, Raekwon, Scarface, Ab-Soul, Meechy Darko, Earl
Sweatshirt, Mac Miller, and more.
The 17 tracks may appear daunting on paper, but the vast majority of songs are 2-4 minutes
and truly breeze by.
Don't sleep on this record. Classic. I'm buying it on vinyl and cd.

This is just as monstrous as I was hoping and expecting it to be. Gonna let it sit for a
minute but I think this will probably bump to a 5 for me.
Edit: Okay yeah, fuck it, this is FIRE. Gibbs is immaculate lyrically, and the way he fits
his flow to Madlib's beats is just thrilling. This is a classic.

AOTYrI was so hyped for this and it surpassed all expectations. I'm on my fourth straight listen right now and I usually never do that. Could end up a 5, this is just too good.

I guess I appreciate what Madlib and Freddie Gibbs are trying to do - add two out of character companions together. But what I thought would be at least a semi-decent album turned out to be a dull dull experience. Great underground hip hop lives or die by the thump, and Madlib very rarely gets it correct inspite of his obvious skills with finding interesting samples and cutting them in inventive ways. Freddie Gibbs is strong enough as a traditional rap writer but very rarely exceeds workingman quality. The combination of the two is a record that, I can obviously see why other people like, but it's so dull to me.

Pinata is everything a good collaboration should be. Freddie Gibbs returns to his role as
the last hard ass motherfucker in a mainstream rap universe that's about as threatening as
the bear in the Snuggle fabric softener commercials. His laid back drawl bounces in and out
of Madlib's chopped soul samples and Motown breaks with a streetwise nonchalance that is
reminiscent of Guru -- if only he came of age on a grizzled street corner instead of in
graduate classes. Madlib is in full on soul-jam mode. The jazzy experiments of his slew of
recent solo tapes is put on the back burner for a reprise of the chopped and sultry sounds
of mid-60's Detroit a la his collaborations with MF DOOM and Guilty Simpson. The final
result is somewhere between those two projects but no less immediate.

This is goddamn amazing. I dont want to encourage the saying that rap has gone soft, but it is different than the gang dominated 90s and it's really cool to get a modern rap album that resembles a Ready To Die for example, talking about the gang lifestyle. Every song has amazing Freddie verses, amazing beats by Madlib and amazing features, actually maybe the best features on any rap albums

Black Dynamite: the album. I still don't know why I didn't listen to this back then. Madlib is a legend, the beats all have that vintage-yet-modern quality to 'em, making it a work that will, imo, pass the test of time. Freddie is a trve gangsta rapper, delivering bars and quotes and an overall gritty delivery. Compared to Bandana, it's on the whole less scattered and more cohesive, even though it's more monolithic both in terms of Freddie's delivery as well as Madlib's beats. The strongest of the swarm usually is a master of one instead of a jack-of-all-trades.

The chemistry that Gibbs and MadLib have on this record is unreal. While Gibbs' other records have him over gritty 2000's type garage rap beats, Pinata unleashes the artist as we've never heard him before, and it sounds phenomenal. Gibbs is able to tell stories about his life, and his delivery meshes so well with the tracks MadLib lays down that you really feel what Freddie is saying, turning each track about a small portion of the gangster rappers day into a part of a story about his life.An overlooked hip hop record of the decade amongst the mainstream. There are a few weak spots here and there, but certainly a classic.
