A slight progression from Coroner. Still very thrashy, but suggesting a more prog/tech oriented future. More complex, and less purely neoclassical.

Personally I find this a little overrated. It's a definite improvement over their overly samey debut but has its own problems with the songs kind of blurring together, and the production is only a little improved. Masked Jackal and Skeleton On Your Shoulder are some badass songs though.

Improved production, further technicality in their riffcraft, and an overall increase in aggression makes Punishment For Decadence a big step forward for the band, and it shows right from the first track "Absorbed" which changes tempo almost suddenly at times and is an onslaught for vicious riffs and solos. "Masked Jackal" is just as impressive with its buildup riffs and intense atmosphere. The "Purple Haze" cover is well done as well featuring an old school heavy metal vibe. The band's first masterpiece, but it only gets better from here.

Coroner clearly had an influence on much of the extreme metal that came out in the late 80's and throughout the 90's. This is a fine record in itself, and I will likely check out some of their other stuff.

Swiss tech thrash masters Coroner are usually brought up in the conversation when talking about the greatest thrash metal bands. However the community seems to be divided on whether it's the early albums (R.I.P. and Punishment for Decadence) or the later albums (No More Color and Mental Vortex) which deserve the distinction as best Coroner album. I choose the early ones, specifically Punishment for Decadence. Corner is an exceptionally talented band, pushing the boundaries of thrash with complex song structures and masterful instrumental performances. Tommy T Baron's guitar work is superb, quite possibly the best we've seen in the genre. Take a listen to Arc-Lite and see for yourself.
