A great deal of skepticism arose when Intervals announced that they added a vocalist, and it
turns out it was warranted. Fans of instrumental Intervals will unfortunately be
disappointed with this outing. While Mike Semesky is a gifted and very melodic singer,
Intervals made the choice of writing their songs around his vocals. Gone are the guitar-
driven melodies and complex song structures that made In Time so great; Aaron Marshall's
virtuosic soloing, which flourished on In Time, now makes only sparse appearances between
verses. Rather than use Mike's voice to add another dimension of complexity, Intervals
simplified their songwriting to accommodate the new addition.
Don't get me wrong: for what it is, A Voice Within is a stellar progressive rock/pop album,
with excellent vocals and melodies. But it is entirely different from what made Intervals
famous. While some diehard fans still insist on an instrumental release of A Voice Within,
such a release would yield only vapid backing tracks; a shell of what Intervals once was.
"Breathe" is the only track reminiscent of old Intervals, but while breathtakingly beautiful
it only clocks in at a mere two minutes. Overall, A Voice Within is over-simplified and
quite generic, but will certainly appeal to a wider audience.

The music is incredible like usual, the but the vox just ruin it for me. Sorry, Intervals; you were better instrumental.

The vocals ruined it for me. Ending up being a totally passive and ho-hum experience. Hope to listen to the instrumental version soon.

This album falls into the trap that a lot of modern prog metal does: it jams a bunch of not unpleasant but similar heavy riffs together song after song and does not differentiate enough between them, save small eclectic moments and touches which are forgotten about after the record ends. Furthermore, the album's marriage between djent and pop doesn't work for me- every time I try to hook on to the poppy melodies, the slow drumbeats and chugging guitars strip the energy away. Good production and performances, but the songwriting leaves a lot to be desired.

I'm actually quite happy that the following album, "The Shape of Colour" (2015), is without vocals therefore giving guitarist Aaron Marshall the artistic freedom to write the songs only as he wished. I can't say its bad, it's actually quite a solid release but it sounds too metalcore-ish to me on some points. Worth a listen but definitely go check their next release, it rocks hard.

The instrumentals on here are very good, showcasing the band's proficiency without being pointlessly technical. The vocals add a lot as well, helping to make this a very catchy album that will likely become better upon more listens.

An epic surprise. Intervals expands on their instrumental sound while adding Mike Semesky's awesome vocal work to bring it all perfectly together. A great release that shows that the massive potential these guys had in the past was definitely worthwhile.

This album slays ! The guitar riffage is toned down a bit to make room for vocals, but each member gets to shine in places. The new vocalist sounds great, and the band tries new post-rock elements in some of the longer tracks. Unfortunately the second half of "The Self Surrendered" is overly long and repetitive and doesn't really work. Thats the only part of this album I don't love. Amazing album !
