4.0 excellent | Crimson | March 27th 08 | Edge of Sanity at their most aggressive, old-school death metal meets the progressive nature of Dan Swano in an interesting, but flawed combination. There are some amazing songs, like Enigma and the odd but interesting When All Is Said, yet some amount of filler creeps on, reducing the final score of this.
Dan's vocals are exemplary, from the rare appearance of his cleans to his varied growls and shouts, and the guitars roll out one memorable riff after another, only a few traces of later Edge of Sanity can be found here, with the occasional melodic lead popping up or the slow-downs, but apart from that, this is their most brutal and aggressive album, recommended to any Edge of Sanity fan or just Death Metal fans in particular, there's plenty to enjoy here.

2.0 poor | GamamJ | October 11th 20 | Way too long, and even with some hints of prog and melodic tendencies, all in all way too standard.

2.0 poor | EasterInTheBatcave | June 9th 16 | A big improvement from Nothing but Death Remains, Unorthodox is the first Edge of Sanity record where the band would start establishing their own unique sound. There are cool progressive touches all across the album, and though some of the death metal parts get a bit boring-- particularly in the latter half of the record-- these touches make sitting through some of them worth it. Also, Dan Swano's growls are fantastic (as per usual), and though the production is a bit muddy, it actually helps give the album an old school vibe which suits the music very well. Overall, while the death metal stuff gets a bit tiresome after a while, the unique (and dare I say, unorthodox) flourishes running through the record help make it a worthwhile listen.

2.5 average | CrazyFool84 | September 14th 12 | While breaking absolutely no ground in the world of death metal, Unorthodox is an early indication of the direction this band was heading in, soon to take their place as leaders in the progressive death metal movement. rUnless you're looking for some run of the mill, old-school death metal, or are just a really die-hard fan, this album won't do much for you aside from help chart a band's evolution.
