DM's clangy, metallic, samples heavy opus stars off on a weird but intriguing intro followed by vox that are by now the classic DM ones we all know. 1 is not necessarily a track I would rejam a million times but it def has lots of ideas. I like the bass intro riff on 2 but not much more to say about it, whilst 3 is a cool classic song after which 4 feels a bit sleepy though all the weird sampled sounds maintain some interest. Same goes for 5 though it's not so bad. 6 is a piano ballad which really is a big boo and has nothing to do on this LP, but 7 finally brings back more of a beat that we've been missing since 3. It's a pretty cool DM song from that era tbf the era of sampler machines and a cold'n' weird aesthetic. 8 is again an okay song that isnt necessarily rivetting but does have some pretty unusual and interesting sounds in there. I knew 9 and it is quite cool, featuring some more of these cold, steely drums. The ending is a bit weird with a fadeout then followed by a random synthy conclusion, but given it has its own identity, lots of ideas, and (only) a couple standout tracks, this feels still like a 3.5

In the world of synthpop and electronic rock, Depeche Mode are one of the seminal bands. With this album as the starting point, they would up their game to essential-listening levels, and would be forever cemented as one of the top bands in the genre. Here, we have brooding, yet occasionally upbeat synthpop, and though a few songs are plagued by awful lyrics, it is for the most part a great album. The scathing closer, "Blasphemous Rumors", is one of the bands' crowning achievements, while other excellent tracks like "Lie To Me" and "Master And Servant" really make this record the first truly great one in Depeche Mode's discography. Basically, if you're looking for a great slab of catchy synthpop with slight industrial and electronic rock leanings, you should give this one a spin.

With a clear sense of darkness and undeniable irony, Depeche Mode have shown us just how orgasmic their industrial sound can be. Though it's not without some immaturity, Some Great Reward never really grows stale and finds Dave Gahan and his unforgettable team producing wondrous songs.

This album is criminally underrated. It was one of the first albums I ever heard by Depeche Mode and remains my all time favorite. I find that it has the perfect balance of Industrial and Synthpop, balancing clanking, mechanical sounding synths and seductive 80's pop melodies.
