Iron Maiden - Powerslave, now that's a classic. Jane Doe isn't a classic by any of the means, all it is is technical metalcore (not that special). I'll admit lyrically it's intelligent, technicality of the album is superb. But come on people stop lying to yourselves there is NO and I repeat NOOOO vocal talent to even make this a classic at all. All it is RAH RAH RAH RAH RAH for 45:22. Tbh the vocals made the album shit, and they're worse than the guy in Doomthrone and their horrible debut.

0.0 | Kusuriuri | September 7th 13 | this album is like that fucker you find in high school who's incredibly tough but turns out to be extremely smart. you know those ones, who look like they want to kill you at first but eventually you realize they're actually pretty friendly and have some troubles but once you get together he wants to be your friend but eventually you realize he does everything better than you do and you're not sure if you wanna be his friend anymore because he makes you feel like less of a man (and human being) and when trying to get away from him without realizing to not be rude since he hasn't done anything wrong he ends up saving your life and you realize how stupid you are for not being friendlier with him before and you decide you want him in your life and you're grateful for it. then he hugs you, breaks a part of you by accident but you forgive him and remain a friend for the rest of your life with him occassionally beating the shit out of you by accident since he couldn't control it, but you actually like it later on cause it makes you tougher. this album is that plus some breakdowns and a really pissed off donald duck.

5.0 classic | Enotron | April 24th 10 | It's been long overdue that I bump this to a 5. Even when pigeonholed under a genre filled with a ton of laughable
bands and overused techniques, Converge display a heavy sense of artistic sincerity that makes them quite an
anomaly within the metalcore genre. But even in the most unbiased, objective perception, Converge display on Jane
Doe an unconventional, yet believable stride in the way they approach their music. The vocals are loose and wild, yet
follow a truly defined bark. The music aggressively thrashes and switches pace, but also shows itself to be
constructed in a manner that matures and paces itself in a cinematic manner throughout the album. Throughout all
the intensity and the metal-intended purposes, there is no doubt that passion and ambition are what truly
underly this hectic, yet beautifully constructed album.

0.0 | kalkal50 | September 26th 07 | After several listens, I've reached the conclusion that Converge's Jane Doe is the best metalcore album ever. No actually, it's the best album ever. The way I see it, when dissected, the album is made up of roughly two so-called "greater" facets. There's an instrumental facade to the album which at first seems great, but doesn't strike you as being something so consistent that it compels further excavation. However, it's a secondary facade which makes up the foundation of Jane Doe's splendor. In perspective, Jane Doe is very emotional but fails to deliver that emotion from the get-go. This latent emotional quality, which is expressed to it's full potential only when you've listened to the whole album, is the aspect that makes Jane Doe rise above any other metalcore record. The perfect album in my honest opinion.

0.0 | geasoftime | April 9th 13 | I really want to give this a 1. It's not fair that I have to call a hardcore album "poor" instead of awful. Poor implies that there are some redeeming qualities to the music, and nothing redeems this album. It's a steaming pile of shit.

5.0 classic | trianglefuck | March 29th 11 | No need for introductions, at least for the album itself, because I'm sure that everyone wants to know who is the lady behind Jacob's rage, that led him to achieve musical perfection. I'm sure that, when he completed the album, he reached the pure state of catharsis, not only because he yelled all his tears out, but also by knowing that we would also feel it, we would also feel his pain, his anger, his desperation, the whole emotional flood inside him, when we'd hear Jane Doe. A pure masterpiece that drains our comfort away and makes us feel miserable, because, by the time the album's over, we realize that we will never feel the same thing as Jacob felt.

3.5 great | Commortus | January 7th 09 | I love the cover art on this... the image of an emaciated girl transforming into a horde of locusts is just exciting, for some reason. Despite all of the hubbub around this album, this really isn't the most intense album ever - it's fractured without being truly broken, emotional without being completely unhinged. Honestly, that's probably a good thing, because it allows Converge to craft wonderful tracks that have enough intensity to hook the listener on the first listen and enough depth to keep people interested for 20+ listens. Heaven In Her Arms is one of the best songs ever written, but I find the title track to be slightly overrated - it's good, but it's not all that. Regardless, this is an outstanding album.

4.5 superb | heck | July 20th 18 | A while back Sowing was putting together a Jane Doe retrospective in which various Sput members would do write-ups for different songs, but it seems as if that project is dead in the water. A such, here is the write-up I would've contributed, for Heaven in Her Arms:rSometimes nothing can be more powerful - or devastating - than three simple words. To me, perhaps more than any other track, "Heaven in Her Arms" epitomizes what Jane Doe is about. It is among the more straightforward tracks on the album, both musically - boasting an assult-on-the-senses barrage of some of the grooviest riffs Converge ever put to tape alongside Jacob Bannon at his most tortured and dehumanized - and especially lyrically, in a way that makes it all the more effective. Where other tracks on the album are more opaque in their imagery, "Heaven in Her Arms" is blunt, poignant, and conveys the idea of heartbreak at its most basic. The beauty of its simplicity is that it makes it one of the most universally relatable songs on an album renowned for its relatability. The song reaches its climax with a breakdown, in both the musical and emotional senses, in which Bannon proclaims "Three simple words bled me dry, bled us dry". In my judgment, it is one of the most desperate yet cathartic moments on the entire album and the perfect way to round off one of my favorite songs in Converge's large and impressive discography.

4.0 excellent | brandiblitz142 | December 25th 16 | You know this has to be the first album that took me more listens than anything I have ever listened to before. Used to be a cacophony of noise and nothing else. However, once I got the concept (after several months and a tough breakup) I am impressed with the raw emotion and content of this album. Lyrics may be almost unhearable but are very poetic when looked at. An album that gets more interesting and captivating with each listen, and I honestly love it. I dont know it may have been me going through one at a time through but once I reached "Phoenix in Flight/Flames" it solidified my love for the album, and gave me the chills. Love the storytelling, all haunting, angry, emotive, and beautiful. (See: Concubine, Fault and Fracture, Homewrecker, Broken Vow, Phoenix in Flight/Flames, Jane Doe). All good songs though. Hard to put a finger on which ones in particular.

2.0 poor | Activista anti-MTV | September 30th 11 | Converge's Jane Doe is a masterpiece in the metal/hardcore genre. From its brutal outset ("Concubine") to its towering finish ("Jane Doe"), Converge's precise instrumentation is an excellent example of how changes in tempo and tonality can be used to create both intense and emotional songs. Vocalist Jacob Bannon's variegated delivery ranges from a superbly chaotic "scream" to a choice disharmonious groan, bringing the music to life. Jane Doe might as well not have any lyrics (it does), because Converge is one seething mass of sound on this, the band's magnum opus.

3.0 good | Xenorazr | September 12th 10 | Jane Doe feels like, more than anything, a hardcore band taking their first swing at recording in a garage with a "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" syndrome fueling their fire. The good news is that if hardcore tickles your fancy and you want more overdone distortion than a band really needs, then this will be the perfect drug. For the rest of us, however, this amounts to little more than nonsensical, schizophrenic combustion with few breaks. The strong points aren't numerous, and most of them are saved for the last few tracks. In the end, it's a gigantic shot for some, a toss-aside for others.

This much more than metalcore, or punk, or metal or whatever genres you can pinpoint this too. This is a classic, a legacy of aggressive music and shows what aggressive music can be. Granted, I thought whitechapel was the most brootal thing on earth. "How could anyone like something this abrasive and this fast? The quality of every instrument sounds like someone recorded this with a $20 value brand mic. Sure, his lyrics are poetic but I can't even understand half of what he's saying. WHY DES EVERYONE LOVE THIS BUT ME?!"rSo what changed? Not much. It's still every one of those things. But.. I love this album like a son. You grow up and suddenly you realize you've been listening to the wrong stuff; that's just life. This album made me think outside of the box for the first time in my relationship with music. It was my rebirth into the more chaotic and progressive meaning of metalcore.

5.0 classic | InVein | November 19th 15 | I understand most of the bad ratings, when I first listened to Converge I just thought "wtf is this shit?". After
years of hating them I still was pretty convinced, they are the most overrated band in the world. But my
musical taste changed massively in those years and went from generic metal- and deathcore to more
advanced forms of dark and extreme music. A few months ago I decided to give Converge another try. It was a
completely different and eyeopening experience. It wasn't about the sound of Bannons voice (which distracted
me every time I tried to listen) nor about understanding any of the (great) lyrics, but the pure, raw energy, the
noise, the anger, the hate he was spitting at me through my headphones, paired with lunatic riffs and drums.
Converge is not about making easy-listening song structures, not about beautiful melodies or epic clean
choruses. They are the musical incarnation of pure, unfiltered hate and anger. Combined with the amazing
lyrics it's probably one of the best concept albums ever made. An outburst of fury. A punch right to the face. A
masterpiece.

A masterpiece if not THE masterpiece: it is crunchy, heavy Hardcore/Metal. It's complex in every way: musically, lyrically, emotionally. Although you only hear Jacob Bannon yelling "rawrawraw", he's yelling somehting else. Hidden lyrics behing the blistering guitars, distorted bass, and thunderous drums. 0.0 | | September 30th 12 | I guess I should give a little background onto how I stumbled upon this "band" (If you can even call stupid, unorganized, random noise a "band" or "music" for that matter) I was watching one of my favorite music videos by one of my favorite bands. That being Knives and Pens by Black Veil Brides. I made a comment on the video about how why more people don't listen to Black Veil Brides, they just listen to mainstream crap like Justin Bieber and those rapper guys. This resulted in me getting the top comment on the video, which of course caught the attention of total trolls. He replied, "You are an imbecile. You'll grow out of your teeny-bopper phase and join the rest of us listening to Converge, Pig Destroyer, etc." He also added, "Kill yourself."
I of course did not reply, due to his obvious trolling, and him thinking he's fancy because he can use his "big boy words" (ugh -__________-) but I had never heard of either of those bands. (Especially not Pig Destroyer, what a STUPID name) But I did look up Converge, and boy, are they terrible.
First of all, Converge is just bad. You can't understand the lyrics, they are self-indulgent because they think they're high and mighty because they use things called "time signatures" and "theremins" (I don't even know what a theremin is!!!!! Ugh) Seriously, the lyrics are also super immature. The WHOLE album is about some break-up. Like seriously, if I wanted to hear that drama, I would just go to middle school and listen to all of my mainstream friends bicker about relationships and other crap. Geez. Even the bands that you guys on this site hate on a lot (BOTDF, etc. btw, BOTDF is amazing) They have better lyrics, like about rising from the ashes and rebelling against the high power. Not about stupid break-ups, god.
I will give the band one thing, though. They have some pretty cool guitar parts, but they play them OVER AND OVER in the song until you get sick of it. Wow, come up with something new, "masterpiece" band. I will listen to another album and give my opinion, but until then, I recommend you stay away from this band, and accept the fact that bands like BVB and BMTH (Bring Me the Horizon for those that don't know) are good, and you just judge them by their looks.
Converge, here's some advice: Better lyrics, more variety in the guitar solos, and stick with stuff I can tap my foot to. Otherwise, the music is just plain boring.

5.0 classic | wacknizzle | January 16th 12 | One of my best experiences with music was finding converge when i was 15, now 7 fucking years ago, holy fuck time has passed. Fuck is this album great, there is something great about enjoying this album and as time goes on it becomes more and more clear to me how much i love this album. I may enjoy When Forever Comes Crashing more, but this album is pure heartbreak, when someone leaves you and there is nothing you can do about it. It's awesome, so brutally raw and heavy. It's an acquired taste but once you like it nothing else is quite like it or as good. I'd say start with WFCC and PTES than do JD and listen to it the whole way through the first time, it will be awesome, trust me. If you like metal but not Converge go fuck yourself, your opinion does not matter to me. "oh but what about BTBAM' yeah but they wouldn't even exist without converge, i like them too but it's weak sauce compared to this. Thats the point, BTBAM is meant to be easy to listen to but it's not rewarding as Converge. catchy metal can go fuck itself when it comes to Converge, this shit is real. I'd pick Converge over any other band. Dem riffs are just nasty, Bannon is a beast, his screaming is awesome, your a pussy if you can't handle it.

5.0 classic | Type2Diabeetus | October 8th 11 | Jane Doe is an album that is so angry and brutal that many will find it intolerable. But, those that approach it with an open mind and give it a chance will most likely discover a masterpiece. The album starts off at a furious pace, opening with "Concubine", a screaming grindcore frenzy that only barely slows down for the mathy and complex "Fault and Fracture." The rest of the album stays at relatively the same pace, rarely slowing down for a few calmer moments. The album's highlight is the finale, the epic 11 minute title track that wraps everything up with perfection and leaves the listener stunned even after it's over. Jane Doe is a fantastic album and most people who give it a full listen will probably agree

I don't wanna be one of those cliche Sputnik jerks who obsesses about BTBAM, Opeth and Converge, but this album simply kicks ass. Its like a fucking freight train. Most albums have a time or place when you find suitable to listen, however this wants to be listened to any time, any place anywhere. While driving, walking, cooking, cleaning, working playing video games, drinking beer, getting out of bed in the morning... any situation I find myself in, I'm craving to just dive into the midst of this album where it really starts to take off and just get my ass kicked. Kicked by the razor sharp chunks of sound slammed out by the guitars, and the high pitched, attack-heavy snaredrum and the sub-heavy thump of every single bassdrum note. When Sputnik first introduced me to this album, I didn't know what all the fuss was about. In fact, I despised this when I first heard it. I though it was awful... And then after a few listens it dawned on me that this was an instant classic. After even more listens again, it got even better. And now i love it. Jane Doe is just awesome. It really is.

4.0 excellent | HSThomas | December 3rd 10 | I have to admit that my perception of Converge will always be tarnished by the almost religious bigotry that defends this album. I remember approaching this album with quite a reserved and cold attitude due to the amount of absurd hype around it. After six listens I can say that this is an excellent piece of emotional metalcore, despite the grindcore elements sometimes smothering the emotions and Bannon's screams being on the side of whiney and weak on occasion. However it is the three last tracks that make this album. Some of the most fucked up yet beautifully twisted metalcore songs ever. They manage to emulate the realism of a rape in every horrific detail and every turgid emotion. In my opinion, this is a fantastic metalcore record despite its flaws.

3.5 great | TheBalderdashMan | November 6th 10 | Jane Doe is an all-out assault on every part of the anatomy. So far I've only needed two major surgeries as a result of Converge, but I've talked to people who've had more. Jane Doe delivers such a relentless pummeling that it's hard to be aware of what's actually happening at any point on the album, but it's so compellingly intense that you kind of go with it. Ordinarily I would say that an album like this confused volume and distortion with musical intensity, but, while I've heard more intensity from more reserved bands like Against Me!, Converge actually does seem to raise volume and distortion to such a level that it does create intensity. Or perhaps there is actually some musical invention buried diligently under the surface. Whatever the reason, Jane Doe is-well, an experience. It's not to be missed.

4.5 superb | londoncalling457 | May 28th 07 | Upon joining Sputnikmusic, I noticed almost immediately that this album was held in very high regards. Although I knew that Converge was definitely not the type of band I typically listen to I decided to give them a chance. Now, my thoughts when I first heard this album, you ask? Amazing?; Emotional?; Original? Well, the answer is none of those. I immediately dismissed Jane Doe as nothing more than a noisy mess. Even after repeated attempts to get into this, I just couldn't do it. However, that was then, this is now. About a week ago, I was browsing All Music Guide for some new music, when once again, I came upon Converge. I read the review to Jane Doe and somehow forgot my aforementioned feelings of "hatred" towards this. But when I gave this album my undivided attention, my feelings seemed to change. I recognized that yes, this is emotional, energetic, agressive, angry, original, and overall..amazing. Jane Doe is one of those albums that you need to set apart some time to listen to as a whole to get a feel for it, but those 40 minutes or so will be unforgettable.

3.5 great | SalteyBacon | January 25th 24 | This might be the only metal core album I'll ever want to hear. The tracklist flows so well and is just intense with post hardcore breaks where they're needed. It's hardcore and brutal so much I loose a tooth everytime I hear this in full, or even have the patience to sit through hearing damage.

5.0 classic | Bedex | December 22nd 23 | Forgot to write this yesterday - although it wasn't a very focused listen, I think it's safe to say this one remains a 5 for now. This thing is chuck full of dynamics, going from absolute onslaught to atmosphere back and forth, and both the opening two tracks and the transition to the colossal s/t closing track ensure the energy/appreciation curve here is just about optimal. Now I always get the feeling that I wish track 3 continued on the absolute chaos of 1-2. There is an alternate world where Jane Doe is shorter, more uniform, and concentrates on the utter violence of 1-2, and I also 5'd it. But whilst that doesn't exist, and whilst I probably will want a focused listen before being definitive, I don't think it makes the version we do have less worthy of a 5.0

4.5 superb | Scott | January 10th 20 | A lot of records want to be the next Jane Doe, and for good reason; this record is beyond visceral. Starting off with Concubine, one of the most technically proficient "death-to-your-neck" songs I've ever heard, and ends with the title track, a cathartic ending to a diverse, satisfying, and mostly-consistent record that Metalcore has ever been blessed with.
Bump |
2.5 average | Progamuffin | August 22nd 19 | It's got some neat quirky time signatures and a nice crusty production but I've heard crust punk bands pull shit like this off better and mathcore bands who do much more with different time signatures that don't end up sounding too stretched out.

2.0 poor | slipandslide | May 22nd 19 | Wish i could rate this lower. I don't find any enjoyment from this "classic" This is just awful all around even from a fan of heavier metal. I don't understand this at all, this is just nonsensical and mindless followers that enjoy this.

5.0 classic | Halez | March 13th 19 | What more is to say about this masterpiece of an album that hasn't been said before? The catharsis is unreal. There's a reason it's borderline unintelligible at points. There's a reason for every part of this album being the way it is. It's not like they haphazardly constructed it to make a quick buck and get you people invested in it, no. They actually gave enough of a shit about artistic integrity and catharsis, and it shows. Everything is constructed with immense levels of tact and precision. Every moment is worth it. Yes, it took a while to click. But once it did, oh boy...

5.0 classic | hughybigboy | July 11th 14 | Converge created a masterpiece with Jane Doe. Massively chaotic and crushingly visceral this album perfectly translates the pain that Jacob Bannon was going through starting off with the cathartic whirlwind of Concubine and finishing off with the 11 minute epic Jane Doe. Jane Doe perfectly shows what its like breaking up with someone and perfectly illustrates the huge range of emotions felt. This album changes pace throughout but it never lets go, not even for a second and throughout the album the listener is fully immersed in the emotional pain that is depicted in Jacob Bannons heart-rending vocals.

5.0 classic | MAGNIFICENT | October 15th 13 | Jane Doe is such a terrible record. It makes me feel terrible about myself. It takes my soul away with each listen I give to it. It shatters my lonely heart. It breaks my fragile bones. It crushes all my insides. But I still crave for it after every listen. Constantly. That is love. Being hurt but somehow enjoying that. Being completely addicted to that pain. But when will the addiction end? Never. It remains with you forever, even when it reaches the point of insignificance, it will still mark you. Jane Doe is exactly that kind of record. I dared denying it so many times, but I can do that no more. Converge's "Jane Doe" is a monster album, one of my favorite albums of all time. Truly an unique, special album. I'm stuck in it and I want out.

5.0 classic | ArisLBM | August 30th 12 | The definitive and seminal hardcore/mathcore/metalcore album. A must listen for fans of any of those genres. At first listen I didn't really like this band most likely because I wasn't into the style at the time. After listening to early metalcore bands like The Dillinger Escape Plan, Every Time I Die, Poison The Well, Earth Crisis, and Zao I really gained an appreciation for this type of music. Then I revisited Converge, first listening to the "Jane Doe" album. Let me just start off by saying that this album/band is unlike anything I've heard before. Right off the bat, this album punches you right in the face. Everything from the insane vocal style to the dissonant and sporadic guitar riffs to the frantic drum playing and thundering bass. While this album is very in your face for the most part, you don't know what to expect next with the progressive and dynamic changes. Even though I haven't really read into the lyrics for the songs, I have a general sense of the story, and it is a powerful story at that. The album cover is almost as recognizable and iconic as Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side Of The Moon". It's a shame more metal heads don't listen to this band or this album, but I do recognize that this album is probably more revered in the hardcore punk scene. This album will always have a special place in my collection, and I will continue to follow this band till the day I die.

5.0 classic | immortalizepain | August 5th 12 | Seldom can we see a hardcore album to be critically successful, but alas, Converge has done it with their most famous masterpiece Jane Doe. With the intelligent lyrics, and insane acrobatic instrumentation, Jane Doe has altered a whole genre, proving that it should be at the top. Some may be put off by Jacob's "pig squeals", but it just needs a little time to get used to it. I recommend to listen to Homewrecker, and the two Phoenix. Really, a brutal and angry album.

5.0 classic | BrushedRed | July 10th 12 | It's not for everyone, but for those who get it, it is a master-class in metalcore. It's noisy, it's chaotic, it's loud, it's wild, it's sad, but most of all, it's melodic and cathartic. It's hard to understand the lyrics as they go, but once they are read, they stay with the listener. All of the sounds with the emotions and the poetic lyricism create one of the finest metalcore albums around; it even touches the realm of psychedelic and shoegaze music. rThis album is really just an overload to the senses, but it is an overload in the best way possible. All of the feelings you feel on this album will be the same feeling you feel whenever you let your own Jane Doe run along. It is hopelessness, depression, heartbreak, anger, sadness, loneliness, and ultimately happiness and relief all cooked up in a ferocious, crazy album. Whether you love or hate our figure, Jane Doe, she is here to stay and has become an icon of the metalcore scene. 5/5

I even started to liking bands wich i consider "Br00tal", but my ears refuse the sounds produced by Converge. I still do not understand what they want to express or their Purpose through this album. but after some time I tried, my ears and my brain finally began to receive the messages that they leave behind the mess they make in every song. behind the noise and chaos, I heard the beauty, a woman, who longed to be kissed by her lover, and that is Jane Doe.

5.0 classic | NeutralThunder12 | September 22nd 10 | With "Jane Doe", Converge have created the most punishing, guttural and piercing metalcore album to ever exist. It tells a familiar tale in an incredibly compelling and original way, through barely decipherable shrieked lyrics (which oddly enough, are decipherable perfectly at the albums most lyrically important moments) and an incredibly raw and chaotic atmosphere. Bannon's vocals and articulation on here are really otherworldly; while I can understand the hate for his style it literally fits perfectly on the album musically and conceptually. Musically, Bannon's high pitched wails present the story in a unique way, because most of the lyrics seen in the lyric booklet aren't even decipherable at most times through Bannon's desperate cries, but only come out at the albums pinnacle points lyrically. This is a risky, but original and satisfying move, and a hell of a compelling way to tell a story. Koller's drumming is sharp and perfect, Ballou's guitar work is sinister and even more perfect, and the atmosphere that all of these things create is simply unreal. "Jane Doe" is a story about heartbreak and anger, propelled to new heights with Bannon's whines and Ballou's incredible atmospheric touches. Best metalcore and worth the acclaim.

5.0 classic | irontusk | February 20th 08 | With Jane Doe, Converge redefined and re explored Metal as a genre for me. With its demonic riffs and technically beautiful drum and bass lines, Jane Doe offers everything to the listener. Stand out tracks include Bitter And Then Some, Thaw and Homewrecker. What I like best about this album is the lack of double kick on it. In a genre where over use of the kick is standard, it is refreshing to hear one footed brutal beats.

5.0 classic | funhouse | November 6th 07 | A disjointed, technical, disgusting, and strangely beautiful release. Converge's epic and uncompromising Jane Doe may be the greatest grindcore album released...ever. Songs range from the positively epic title track to the raging and technical masterpieces of "Concubine" and "Fault and Fracture", and track lengths are as little as fourty-two seconds and stretch to 11 minutes. With Jane Doe, Converge established themselves as one of the most important bands of a generation.

5.0 classic | faultandfracture | October 24th 07 | One of the most fascinating releases in punk/hardcore ever. Their sound comes from seemingly impossible places and converges (hehe, get it?!) to one narrow pathway that leads to the hardcore utopia. I can hear sounds from Scandinavian d-beat, San Diego and New Jersey screamo (or whatever you call it now), Rorschach (most obviously), doom metal, ambient, and the absolutely necessary influence of 80s American hardcore punk and thrash metal. The most beautiful (and simultaneously scary) "metalcore" album I've ever heard in my life.

So right that it KICKS BUTT.
