| 3.0 good | Iai EMERITUS | December 27th 06 | Hip-Hop Is Dead is a concept album of sorts, Nas taking his disillusionment with his contemporaries and asking just what happened to the artists that inspired him. Putting aside the fact that several of the missing artists Nas name-drops are as bad as those he's mocking, andthe irony of having a track named "Hip-Hop Is Dead" be produced by Will.I.Am, Nas seems totally fuelled by this concept. The problem is, for the majority of this record, he's forgotten to write any good songs. Anger and fire is all good, but Nas just doesn't have the vehicles to express himself well here. Nearly every song ranks as a minor disappointment, either by the poor beats, or Nas' reliance on obvious, tired reference points (one of the tracks is a little more than an Eric B & Rakim sample with peppered references to any 80s hip-hop track you care to mention - does this really have replay value to anyone?). Nas fans will enjoy it, of course, but you'd be better off with almost any other Nas album. The latter-day Nas revival has come to a grinding halt here, I'm afraid.

| 4.5 superb | AtavanHalen | September 27th 08 | Almost criminally underrated, this is Nasir Jones' concept album in which modern technology is embraced in the beats, often with brilliant results (the uplifting "Blunt Ashes" and the hard-hitting title track as examples). Lyrically on fire, Nas is loaded with accusations, anger, reflections on life and even a bizarre change of character on "Who Killed It?". Even when former rival Jay-Z briefly steals the show on the excellent "Black Republican", this is a shining point in the fruitful yet occasionally hit-and-miss career of Nas. Arguably his best since Illmatic, and certainly his best this century.

| 3.5 great | MusicMang | February 3rd 19 | Hip Hop Is Dead shows NaS on his ever present level of greatness, with a bump up in production. unfortunately the track "Who Killed it" is awful, showing NaS attempts at out there concepts falling flat. And the majority of the album is off-topic, still some great songs off topic, but a album titled hip hop is dead is a tiny bit more demanding.

| 0.0 | | March 20th 08 | yawn... what happened to Nas? I didnt find a single thing that kept this album seperate from other Nas albums, except maybe "Who Killed It?" and that only changes the vocals. Plus if hip-hop is dead, why record an album that is Hip-Hop, dummy. This album just proves that the Hip-Hop we used to love is dead, and Nas is one of the many culprits. This album pissed me off a whole lot. Fuck You Nas! Jay's album was better, again.

| 4.0 excellent | ron11nyc | April 2nd 07 | Please take the Hip Hop section off this site because you kids know absolutely nothing about hip hop music. You must be looking for guest appearances from The Fray or Pink Floyd. Songs like "Can't Forget About You", "Blunt Ashes" and Carry on Tradition" really put this album over the edge. Not a Classic but an excellent album. A 2.5 rating means you really aren't in to Hip Hop and probably never were to begin with. His story telling capabilities are still tremendous. He showed that in songs like "You Can't Kill Me" and especially in "Who killed it". The album is a refreshing change from the Hip Hop artists of today who only seem to write about drugs, guns, and bitches while Nas lets them know of their history and "Carrying on Tradition".

| 3.5 great | gottalovett07 | December 21st 06 | If hip-hop is dead, then we might just need to make a new genre for this album. Solid from beginning to end. And the inclusion of "Hope" as an instrumental really seals the deal. Hip-hop is dead, and it is time for a new beginning.
