July sounds very winter-y. It's moving - very - slowly, and mostly relies on a somber yet sparse atmosphere - mucho gothic. Nadler is the focus here, her ethereal delivery and confessional lyrics. Pretty but doesn't move me much.

Great album concept, and the atmosphere matches it extremely well. Marissa's guitar playing is nicely emotive, and the extra instrumentation-- particularly on the record's first two tracks-- is superlative. The production is excellent, with just the right amount of reverb on Marissa's voice and a good amount of space for everything to breathe. However, some of the songs are dull, and after the fantastic first two tracks the same heights are never reached for the album's remainder. Still, the strength of the performances and production and sheer earnestness of July are enough to warrant a recommendation.

'July' is a great example of an album that hovers somewhere between good and great. I
genuinely couldn't decide where in the spectrum it fell until I had listened to it several
times. The opening piece 'Drive' and 'Was it a dream' are both excellent (easily the two
best songs on the album) and '1923', 'We are coming back' and 'Dead city Emily' are all very
good indeed. Unfortunately a lot of the album never attempts to be anything more than 'sweet
sounding female folk artist by numbers' and the album as a whole has quite a samey sound.The
songs arrangements, recording and production is impressive. In an age when 100% of
everything on the radio sounds like it was arranged and recorded by a computer it is
refreshing to listen to recordings of music played by real human beings on real instruments.
Parts of this album are merely very nice and easily forgettable but at it's best it is quite
simply beautiful.

Marissa Nadler has some of the most hauntingly beautiful vocals that I’ve ever heard, and her moody music compliments them perfectly. Granted, she has been doing the exact same album for years with only slight variations, but it’s so good. Plus, I really like the increased use of those atmospheric parts that add to the overall ambiance of each song. I think it was the thing that was missing from a lot of her older albums.

Although I initially described this album as being "good" but a bit samey, patience and several listens has unveiled it as one of the most chilling and emotive folk records I have heard in years. Lyrically, Nadler is out of this world.
