What if Burial doesn't deliver. What if it's just a 3.5. And next EP is a 3.0. And LP 3 is a 2.5. What if his idea of the public's "misinterpretation" of everything that follows the Kindred EP causes him to reevaluate the entirety of his image and life. Soon he's doing a photo shot for FACT, his face and Urban Outfitters button-up exposed, while revealing his upbringing, his influence, and his self to everyone. Then Burial regrets everything, he's crying at night and wishing the pain of Googling his name would go away. He stops making music. He opts to ghost-produce for Madonna to survive an artistically and emotionally crippling rest of his life. But despite revealing himself to the world and all the critical scowling that followed, deep down he's proud of everything he did, even if the public didn't see it that way. A half smile rests on his face as they lower him beneath the ground, to spend an entirety from whence he came; darkness and obscurity.

After attaining much mainstream attention, garnering thousands and thousands more fans and releasing several radio singles, I bet you thought Burial was going to become one of the pop-IDMers he once denounced. HAHA. Yea, right. Burial is back with a revamped flow, and his voice sounds really good. All the while Burial still retains the variety of epic beats and the ever-clever, cartel kingpin lyrics he?s always had.

Rival Dealer is a change of moods for Burial. While he has always been at his best in the past when channeling distance and longing, the songs on Rival Dealer are finally at peace with their surroundings. For the first time we finally get the Hollywood ending for Untrue's beautiful emptiness and Kindred's overwhelming confusion that we've been waiting for.

This has pretty much completely won me over, after having some initial hesitations on track 2 and 3, like most. In a way I think this can almost be looked at as Burial's first concept album. And in that regard, he becomes a manipulator of sorts, using jarring samples with already preconceived notions of style attached to them to get a point across. (It's not like he didn't know exactly what he was doing, and exactly how people would react, to dat 80s drum fill). Favorite moment is track 3 when second movement with the warm major chords starts, but then he drops the sinister dulcimer sounding loop back over it.

One of his finest EPs, with the t/t hitting the road like a drunk and hasty bloke on a German highway (what is it, speed dubstep? Sounds like The Prodigy). Hiders is weird, mostly because it's uplifting (yo i don't listen to Burial to be uplifted), and finally: "Excuse me I'm lost...", which is a top tier Burial track.

Just when you think you have him pinned down, Burial pulls some shit like this. With Rival Dealer, we get to see the more dance and hip-hop side to William Bevan, in a way that might not necessarily be flooring, but intriguing all the same. 'Come Down To Us' is exceptional though.

Mah dude went all over the place on this and I feel like he had fun making the record. 1 and 3 are dense enough that they could be EPs on their own. 1 is top tier and a solid 4.3. Some of the hardest hitting Burial material out there, bouncy, upbeat and fast tempoed as if Burial made a The Prodigy track. At 5 min the track transitions into something grittier and subtler but still bouncy, medig. Another transition at 7:30, building up to one of the loveliest ambient textures Burial's made - I miss Untrue man. There is even some kind of flute featured. On its own, this t/t would be a 4.3 EP. 2 is oddly happy but comforting. I'm not sure if I like it, it confuses me. It sounds like the soundtrack to the happy end of a movie where two lovers finally get to be together, and if it weren't for the vox I'd be hard pressed to guess it's a Burial track. 3 features a sitar (?) based beat, feels high as fck that breaks at min 7 into some kind of Burial-esque abstract hip hop, always with his classic vox. It's cool but not as much as 1, would be a 4.0 on its own, so the EP overall is around 4.1

"Don't be afraid to step into the unknown..." A woman's voice says around the four minute mark of "Come Down To Us", expressing the sentiment of Rival Dealer as a whole. Whereas in his past work Burial's sound always seemed to have this paranoid vibe to them, the tracks on here feel extremely comfortable and unabashedly natural. That's not to say these tracks have somehow lost personality; Burials staticky intros and beautifully woven samples of sublime female vocals still permeate the runtime length, but there's a distinct sense of contentness here, something that had only previously been explored by Burial in one or two songs, "Rough Sleeper" being the most obvious candidate. Altogether, the title track is a nice starting point, but "Hiders" and "Come Down To Us" is where things really get cooking. I don't feel uncomfortable saying that the latter is one of his shining moments as an artist, and a definitive turning point for him if he continues on this path. In short, Burial isn't afraid anymore. What that means for his music, we shall see, but if it's anything like this, it will be welcomed.

A gritty-city mini-adventure that somehow thematically incorporates both outer space and anti-bullying (!). Sentiments are expressed via convoluted samples and ethereal female voices in a loosely strung together rain-soaked glitch world that blasts breakbeats amidst gun clicks and train screeches, slows down time completely, and lifts spirits into the heavens with posi-synths.

This is now officially my favourite Burial release. Every song on this thing is beautiful and absolutely brilliant. An EP that shows you what it means to be yourself and not hide from others or let your diversity get you down, because there are always people who love you no matter what. Thank you Burial for yet ANOTHER masterpiece.
