5.0 classic | Arche | October 28th 16 | I can't remember the moment I realised Lost In The Dream was worth buying. I can't remember what made me listen beyond that first try, filled with so many niceties but so few immediate standouts. To be honest, I'm still not entirely sure what makes this click so wonderfully for me, but... it just does. The dream-like reverb, Adam Granduciel's calming vocals, heartland/psych rock guitars and the overwhelming bittersweet aura this gives out are all very well, but there's something very unsuspecting about how this gets into your head. For 10 tracks, each averaging around 6 minutes, there's not a huge amount of variation within each one - yet, the replay value is outstanding. Through an almost subconscious process, this has wormed its way into my affections, making my head feel free and every glint of light feel like summer - and for that reason, after only two-and-a-half years I'm convinced I will love this forever.

4.0 excellent | Antonius | February 1st 15 | This is a much more consolidated effort by the War On Drugs than the previous LP, Slave Ambient. It is so good that you will consider it as one of the best albums of 2014. The Dylan ("Eyes to the Wind", "Lost In The Dream") and Springsteen ("An Ocean In Between The Waves", "Burning") influences are more evident than ever, while the opening two tracks -"Under The Pressure" & "Red Eyes"- are two exceptional songs of the so-called americana/shoegaze genre

3.9 excellent | Erwann S. STAFF | March 12th 19 | Nostalgia in the 2010s: listening to The War on Drugs because it's reminiscent of 80s popular music, and voting for Trump because it reminds you of Reagan.

4.5 superb | LastYearAtMarienbad | June 20th 17 | The War on Drugs never cease to impress. Lush synthy arrangements and Dylan-esque vocals collude to create an ecstatic and utterly new sound. The depth and poignancy of the lyrics are astounding. I can no longer listen to this record in the car because I'm liable to tear up and cause an accident. Their new record drops in 2 months and I CANNOT WAIT. I've seen these guys live on multiple occasions and they are just as tight and resplendent live as they are on record.

4.5 superb | mouton0ir | August 20th 16 | "I don't mind you disappearing, 'cause I know you can be found." A beautiful, coherent, and
emotional experience that blends together seamlessly. A bit of a nostalgic sound-- Bob Dylan mixed
with Tom Petty, and Mike Scott of the Waterboys (Under the Pressure is a VERY early-Waterboys-
sounding song, and Granduciel's vocals share similarities to Scott's in general), -- but never trite. In
fact, I would argue that the 70s/80s heartland rock influence ties to the lyrical themes perfectly. It
complements the overall message the album (moving on from loss; giving that loss meaning). A few
songs sometimes blur together instead of just *blend*, but never in a way that truly detracts from the
experience. Truly flows like an ALBUM rather than a collection of songs: the first song is a clear
beginning, and the final song is a clear (and gorgeously bittersweet) ending.

4.0 excellent | CrazyFool84 | October 26th 15 | Nice to see band's that still appreciate their roots and musicianship are still putting out top-notch music. I was happy to stumble across these guys, really digging this album and the band's overall vibe. Will definitely be looking into more from them in the future.

5.0 classic | pauliegeezee10 | August 27th 14 | Nothing much to say that hasn't already been said here there and everywhere, but I still wanted to chime in here. Hands down THE best saddest Record this year and just maybe this Decade! If it doesn't hit you instantly, do not give up, because when it does finally hit you you just might be a sad sappy mess. Stellar.

4.5 superb | musicisawasteoftime | June 28th 14 | The relationship between Adams voice and the instruments is beautiful. Disc A of the album has pretty rad melody's. And the synth just comes out of the speakers and grabs my soul with a nice warm hug which is needed given the sadness to the lyrics. Then you throw the second disc on the good ol record player and your brain hops aboard as you are memorized by a beautiful sax playing over a warm sythn in Eyes to the wind. Then comes this rad guitar intro to The haunting idle..Im in love with this instrumental. The suffering and loneliness through this album is present but the album shows how the beauty of music can warm up the soul.
Bump |
4.5 superb | clairvoyant | March 15th 14 | Initial thoughts - an excellent step forward from Slave Ambient. More layers, more buildup, and more focus overall. While Slave Ambient was a fantastic journey, meandering from song to song, Lost in the Dream contains more power and buildup in each song. The War On Drugs keeps their strong spacey atmospheric sound going with this one.

4.0 excellent | greenpaintedcement | March 15th 14 | @Hertzberg the first time I listened to it I was riding an NYC bus to the airport at 7 AM. Throw in that sunrise, and it WAS the perfect situation in which to listen to Lost in the Dream.

4.0 excellent | juiceviaorange | March 14th 14 | This could get higher or lower as I've only spun this twice thus far but have really enjoyed it. A very, very paced, relaxing listen, that flows with ease, as I'm sure Granduciel and co. intended (he continues with his affinity for spacey segues and interludes). One thing I was surprised about was the average track length; this is no complaint, just an observation. I remember having a similarly surprising feeling when popping "Wakin' On A Pretty Daze" into my iTunes some 8 or 9 months ago. Not that TWOD didn't have long tracks before, but this album has a 6 minute average track length; maybe a bit of a response to his buddy Kurt Vile's recent track length extension? Who knows, or cares; but funny. Great album though, I'm glad War on Drugs are expanding their small but excellent catalog.
