The release of this album is comparable to an escaped, naked mental patient breaking into ryour house in the middle of the afternoon and yelling random obscenities and unintelligible rgibberish as the blood dripping from his mouth splashes all over your household possessions rthat he's destroying as he thrashes about. He then proceeds to put backmasked Bruce rSpringsteen records into your stereo and turns the volume up until your windows break and ryour eardrums burst. In all the chaos, urban hysteria, and abrasive noise, it's about half ran hour later that you realize you've been stripped bare, left for dead at the back of a 7-rEleven in GA, and are covered in plastic wrap with "FUCK YOU THINK I FUCK THIS FOR" rscribbled across your stomach in black sharpie. That being said, AOTY for sure.

Traces of DG's past three releases can be found all mixed into Government Plates-all while pushing further into more edgy/absurd territory. Aside from the timing of this release, MC ride who usually is balanced out with his other members, takes more of an elemental part on some of these tracks. AOTY? more time will be needed, but no doubt this is Absurd Of The Year.

The album is uneven between Death Grips classics, loaded with noise and intensity, such as "...Pillbox Hat" and "Birds," all of which are strong reasons to award this album a good rating. It's sad, therefore, that the rest of the track listing feels like Death Grips being extremely comfortable in their intensity of simply being 'yep, that's noisy, drop it' rather than attempting to be innovative and redefine their noise like they tend to do on practically every new album.rGovernment Plates is a decent Death Grips release, though not one of their finest.

So simple, yet so creative. For those tapped into the escapism of Death Grips, it doesn't get much more escapist than trying to escape your own conventions! It's not new for DG tracks to shift around or change tempo, but GP turns it into one of the main concepts of the album. The lyrics get stripped down, to the point where a good chunk of these tracks don't evolve further past their own samples. Though, we aren't left entirely in the dark, as the other half keep the cryptic lyrics. It's their most strange album, but it's a good one. Makes for an interesting listen.

An area for diabolical, dark dwelling in a black atmosphere. If every artist has that one album that gains from being underappreciated and underplayed, this is Death Grips'. It feels so isolated, and the lack of MC Ride's vocals on a lot of these tracks just adds to the anxious and unsettled environment.

In Death Grips' short career, they were known as one of the loudest, most abrasive bands in years. An outlier, at least by their standards, is Government Plates, which is an electronically-driven album that subdues MC Ride and lets Zach Hill work his magic. Of course, you wouldn't be able to tell this from the first four songs, as they're all classic Death Grips, with MC Ride yelling obscenity-laden verses and hooks over explosive production from Hill. Yet, when "Birds" starts, things become a bit more subtle than usual. Over the next six tracks, the focus of the album is Hill, and he puts together some interesting stuff like "Feels Like A Wheel" and the title-track, but also has a couple of unfortunate duds as well. The closer is uncharacteristically obnoxious; the band has always been good at being aggressive and loud without being annoying, but the closer crosses that line, especially vocally. That being said, this record is unlike anything Death Grips has made, and thus is an important listen in their discography.

For an album that starts off so well, it really does lose its steam later. The first 3 songs do a good job of shaping it into a more raw and experimental album that DG have never done before. However, the imminent flaw is that the other 2/3rds of the album don't even sound like actual songs. It's not that these instrumentals are inherently bad, they just lack anything special, which limits the albums potential. However, it's difficult to deny that this has some of their best work

No Love Deep Web was an already stripped down effort, with a very inaccessible sound that was usual for Death Grips. It's known now that they really don't give a shit about the response to their albums, which is quite admirable, but it can result in things like this. Government Plates sees MC Ride stepping back a little bit, while Zach Hill takes over to create a schizophrenic, bizarre ride of an album. This is probably the closest they've come to an experience as an album, since everything flows together seamlessly, but the lack of vocals is a gripe. Weird as fuck album, but a slightly disappointing one.

This is a good record. I just wish MC Ride would have contributed more vocals to this release. This could have been their best record if there was simply more lyrical substance and less soundscaping (ex. I'm Overtflow). It is an interesting lesson however. Very interesting. The songs grow on you with every listen but I can't shake the feeling that this reminds me more of a Prodigy or DJ Shadow record than a traditional Death Grips hip hop record. But hey, I'm all up for experimentation. This may grow on me with time, but for now, it's going to have to settle for a 3.
