Having become the most vital band on the planet in the wake of It Takes A Nation Of Millions..., PE could only go one way - down. Professor Griff launched a spectacular attack on the Jewish, and the media labelled them as racists (the irony!) when lead single "Welcome To The Terrordome" dropped. Fear Of A Black Planet held off their descent though, and retrospect reveals it as a glorious last stand. More streamlined and overtly political than anything else they did, the themes of inter-racial relationships and racism in the media detonate like bombs, over and over again. They find time to write hip-hop's finest pro-women song in "Revolutionary Generation", too. That's the thing with Fear Of A Black Planet, see - it's angry, but there's genuine love and hope here, too. Or, as Chuck puts it, 'All I want is peace and love on this planet - ain't that how God planned it?' That's the reason why, in 2095, we'll STILL be twisting to this.

The narratives and examinations of intersectionality are presented in exciting and compelling songs with the Bomb Squad presenting a soundscape as groundbreaking as that of "Nation of Millions".

Oddly enough, I feel this to be a 3.5/5 (or the lightest 4/5 hip-hop albums I've ever rated). The beats and pretty good but I feel there to be some real problems w/ this album. First, as big as this group is, I'm surprised how few members get their mention/voice on this album - I only hear either Chuck D or Flavor Flav versing while the rest pretty much remain silent. Second, there are A LOT of samples on here. Samples can add to any "concept" album, but when samples take up the majority of each track, they leave little to no room for the members to splurge their delivery afterward. After samples go on after 30-sec to 1-min, I would feel it necessary for the artists to at least deliver verses that go on at least double (even triple) the length of the track. All that said, I know this album is good, but it is very overrated...

This is where it all started; among the very best of old school rap and certainly one of the most important. Public Enemy have never been better than on Fear of a Black Planet in my opinion.

Falsely "intelligent" hip-hop for the masses. While Public Enemy's lyrical themes are political, they are not revolutionary or even particularly convincing. And the manner in which they are conveyed makes me want to cringe. Chuck D's brain is too big for his mouth, and his admirable ideas come out in piteable jumbles. The avant garde aspects, such as Pollywannacracka, are really laughable, and are a shrouded tacit admission from Chuck D that he can't actually convey what he wants to say with raps. The beats, for all their "layered intensity," are remarkably bland and boring. Kind of like getting a seven layer bar, but then you realize the seven layers are all different types of animal feces. And Flava Flav sounds like a Somalian kid with a lip cleft trying to learn English. Despicable album.
