If you never thought you'd see a song called "Ride My Rocket" on a Pantera album, boy, do we have an album for you!
"Metal Magic" sees the Texas quartet, then led by terrible singer Terry Glaze, embark in a piss-poor brand of hard'n'heavy with shameless glam overtones. There's even an attemptive ballad with keyboards! The songs veer between the unremarkable and the god-awful, often directly ripping off KISS, an admitted influence for the Darrell brothers. Heck, "Ride My Rocket" itself rips its title off an Ace Frehley song and its music off "Detroit Rock City"! The sad part is, it doesn't get much better from there, causing this album to be almost completely worthless. The only nearly acceptable song is the title track, whose riff hints at what would come years later.
Unfortunately, there would still be two more albums of this tripe before Pantera came to their senses, switched Glaze for Phil Anselmo, and set about redefining thrash metal. Avoid.

The glam era of Pantera was definitely a waste of time in their career, even though many bands were like that in the 80s. And the album art makes me piss my pants everytime I see it! xD

Pantera sounded so different in their early days. Their debut (glam style) is rather poor with
stupid vocals, weird drumming and common bass lines. Guitar sounds ok and the solos are good. We
shouldn't forget that the founders of Pantera, Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell, were inexperienced
and very young at that time, I think 19 and 17 respectively. The positive aspect of the album
however, is Dimebag who shows some early potential.

Guilty pleasure at best. The guitars make it just about listenable and there's a few spots that I enjoyed, but the lame lyrics, mediocre drum and bass and piss poor production (even for its time) just means it gets old quickly.

Being objective, regardless of any other factors on this record, Dimebag (at the time
Diamond) Darrell puts on a pretty impressive shred display, wearing very heavy Randy Rhoads
influence. I feel he sounds close to UFO Era Michael Schenker personally, but Schenker was a
Rhoads influence too. The overall quality of the music is very low however, Terry Glaze has a
very weak voice, neither does he have any real range, nor does he have power. rThis is the
very bottom of the barrel of glam metal. Biggest Part of Me sounds as if Ratt had sent their
most horrible reject out to pasture & Pantera picked it up. The first few songs elicit laughs
when Terry weakly cries "guitar!" before each solos, yes Terry, we know, you're not needed
here. The synths are both outdated today, but even for the era, the production is so wafer
thing, and the keys so poor that they destroy any dimension they were meant to add. There are
tiny Glimpses of quality, like the rapid fire riff in Metal Magic, but when you combine it
with incredibly laughable vocal performance you can't give it anything but derision. That
could be a Dokken song with a bit of polish.rLyrics are as expected, drivel. The less said
about the predatory vibe of Tell Me You Want It the better. Or the lyric "I'll be your back
door lover" Only reason I won't give it a 1 is that there are worse out there, and the solos
are good. Also is Sad Lover just a literal rip off of Van Halen? Sounds like a slightly
changed, but copy from Running with the Devil. Will admit, this song is probably the best
song on the record & has a concise overall song structure, the bass & drums carrying a very
Dairy of a Madman / Blizzard of Oz type of bounce to them.

Not completely unbearable, but this is certainly a sound done better by many other hard rock & heavy metal acts before this album. I could actually name 5 right off my hand: Guns N' Roses, Motley Crue, Judas Priest, Bon Jovi, and Def Leppard. Even so, I'd much rather listen to this parody of "hard metal" than July For Kings' Swim album.

IN THIS DAY AND TIME...OF METAL MAGIC...WE NEED...ROCK AND ROLL...WE NEED...a much better album. The title track's riffage is actually slightly neat, and the first song's kinda catchy, but the vocals are so, so awful, and most of the album just sucks.

This was way before cowboys or vulgar also 1983 whole different time period and the music reflect that as well.You can hear all the influences april wine,motley crue the snyths similar to journey and lover boy.Other than that not so bad for a recording of a bunch of guys only in their teens even darrel was kicking ass on guitar back then.And of course i prefer the heavier pantera over this but it's a nice start to say the least.
