The album I would use to show the spirit of jazz, its dissonant but it doesn't care, its boundlessness but it doesn't care, its a hard listen but it doesn't care. All the musicians sound like they are loving the performance, which makes it a joy to listen to. If you have listened to 'The Shape of Jazz to Come' and wonder what the next important Avant Garde jazz album you need to check out, this is it.

I can understand when people pick out avant-garde people who throw into importance once though unnecessary aspects of music, but this is just... too far gone. For music to be enjoyable, there has to be at least a semblance of melody or direction. All I heard with this was incomprehensible randomness. When you can explain to me the brilliance of this in regular human words come get me. Only when the reasoning for this album's superb status can be explained to a toddler will I try this again. 2.2/5

What an effort. Taking the free in free-jazz to the next level, one can at times think that the different instruments aren't even playing together. Dolphy makes it all sound beautiful together though.

74/100. A little conflicted on this one--- while there were certainly moments I really liked on this, it lacked the impact and atmosphere that many of my favorite free jazz albums have. I also didn't really care for the xylophone parts, but that's probably just personal preference.
