On first listen: Much of an improvement since Autumn Aurora. It's mostly the same stylistically, but with more of its own identity now; it doesn't sound just like Burzum worship anymore. The atmosphere and general production sound are better, the melodies are better, and the songwriting is, relatively speaking, much more adventurous. Woohoo for tempo changes!

This is a really fantastic album, but the right-wing worship in the last track holds the album back. It's not just a political statement I disagree with - this band's heavily thematic work is steeped in the ethos of a heavily jingoistic Ukrainian undercurrent running through that boggiest of countries. The instrumentals are excellent, the atmosphere haunting, and the vocals powerful, but the message is downright despicable.

Not only is this band's approach to atmospheric black metal often not more than mildly enjoyable, the production quality on their earlier records, like this one, is rather horrid.

No other album I've heard can replicate the despairing atmosphere of this record. The atmosphere matches the theme perfectly as if it was intended for the album to place you in early 20th century Ukraine. Romans vocals were the most convincingly emotional he's ever done. Can't get enough of "Solitude" and "When the Flame Turns to Ashes".

Ukrainian Burzum worship, but hey - sounds good to me. My only beef with these guys is their lack of progression from album to album (particularly every album after this one). Great stuff on here though, possibly their best.

Emotional, crushing, pagan black metal straight out of Ukraine. It's not nearly as boring as it initially seems to be, but it doesn't grow like an infected abscess as black metal albums have been known to do. It's not really great in points, nor really bad in points, but it just kind of... is. Despite that, it's undoubtedly creative, and something that those faggots in Mayhem could learn from.
